  • Sure, it's "ok" in that I don't think you should go to jail for it.

    But you need to be "ok" with the consequences. Like how many people would be turned off by your language and would not want to associate with you. Who would judge you as a high-drama person to avoid (this is where I am personally, given your description of using a slur to try to bait someone into trouble). And people like school administrators who would remove you for breaking their specific rules on speech (or mods on a forum). And the employer who would fire you for using what is generally seen as unprofessional language.

  • Be very skeptical of any "rules" of first dates. This one is definitely bunk.

    Lots of people don't drink.

    Lots of people don't like bars.

    Lots of people think dinner/drinks where there is nothing to do but chat is an awful first date. (Hello, this one is me 100%).

    Lots of people are conscientious of drinking on a first date with a person they don't know as a safety measure. (Hello, me again).

    Throw in religious/cultural/medical needs on drinking and this "rule" falls apart even faster.

    If any negative interactions stresses you out, OP, a forum-style community like this might not be for you. Or maybe you would be happier on an instance that disables downvotes; there are a few of them out there.

  • Even people with textbook "consistent" menstrual cycles vary by 3-5 days. People with "inconsistent" cycles vary by weeks or even months. Tracking helps anyone on that spectrum.

    I'm towards the more consistent end of the spectrum, but I still use a calendar reminder because my cycle is not a perfect calendar month long so it's not as easy as "my period will start around the 5th of every month". I want to ensure I'm prepared (mentally and with menstruation products) before it starts. Doubly so because I travel for work a fair bit and need to pack for it.

    And yes, I moved away from a cloud-based app to a local-only tracker over privacy concerns.

  • Don't forget problems with everything around AI too. Like in the US, the Big Beautiful Bill (🤮) attempts to ban states from enforcing AI laws for ten years.

    And even more broadly what happens to the people who do lose jobs to AI? Safety nets are being actively burned down. Just saying "people are scared of new tech" ignores that AI will lead to a shift that we are not prepared for and people will suffer from it. It's way bigger than a handful of new tech tools in a vacuum.

  • Rowing club coach at a university I was interested in told me I was too short to bother trying out but if I dropped all muscle to squeak under 120 lbs I could try for coxswain.

    Jokes on them, rowing generally requires waking up before the ass crack of dawn which was not conducive to my preferred college experience. I found rugby, which has way broader allowance for body type and no sunrise torture sessions.

  • This feels a bit like PTA-driven panic about kids eating Tide Pods when like one person did it. Or razor blades in Halloween candy. Or kids making toilet hooch with their juice boxes. Or the choking game sweeping playgrounds.

    But also, man on internet with no sense of mental health ... sounds almost feasible.

  • If I care enough about another user to note them across time and communities, I give them a tag.

    In the other direction, I don't expect anyone to recall my username from one thread to another, to build any sense of my broader personhood greater than one interaction provides.

    An avatar just seems unnecessary. I'm also on an app that only displays them if I go out of my way to see them.

  • I don't because I don't have the necessary depth of skill.

    But I don't say I "blindly" trust anyone who says they're FOSS. I read reviews, I do what I can to understand who is behind the project. I try to use software (FOSS or otherwise) in a way that minimizes impact to my system as a whole if something goes south. While I can't audit code meaningfully, I can setup unique credentials for everything and use good network management practices and other things to create firebreaks.

  • I worked at a job site prone to flooding so it was mandated to speed evacuations. I liked it and kept the habit.

    Then some misogynist asshat told me it's a masculine thing to do and I should be careful to come across more ladylike. So added on a layer of spite and anti-bigot defenses to why I keep doing it.
