  • I was hired for a job some guy had been fired from several years earlier. There had been at least one other person in the position after him and before me. But for some reason he found out about me, decided I was a problem, and I had to get escorted to and from my car in the employee parking and the building each day for a couple of weeks until he lost interest.

    And more pedestrian yet depressing, the stereotypical: I politely declined unwanted advances from a strange man in a bar, strange man promptly lost all emotional control and proved I made the right decision.

  • When I didn't want to do my high-impact sport anymore, I switched to reffing some, and also moved to competing in lower- impact sports.

    Last summer I joined a dragon boat racing club where our oldest teammates were 78 year old twins and the average age of the whole boat was about 60. "Too old" for sports doesn't exist.

    The pay is more than I make in my current job starting on day 1. 100 days would be over 5 million dollars, enough to retire on. I can devote 8 hours per day for 3.5 months for retirement level money memorizing a list of 100 words.

    If so, it's the Federal Trade Commission Bureau of Consumer Protection.

    Trump ofc tried to replace the commissioners who lead the Bureau. The courts stopped him, at least temporarily, TBH I've lost track of that one. And now he's trying to use the Bureau to go after gender-affirming care. I assume it's something transphobic like, since he believes transgenderism is made up, care to help a person transition would be "fraudulent".

  • I assume they're fishing for data and active email accounts. If someone replies with a review, they know it's an active, monitored email address and can sell it for a better price.

  • My name is on some US patents. Out of anything, I expect those to have the best odds of surviving for 600 years. Of course no one will look them up in 600 years unless they have really niche interests.

  • I do wonder what traits the wealthy would tend to select for.

    I don't think rich people want their kids bashing their brains in playing football. They want to watch the lower classes play in their gladiator battles for the wealthy's entertainment. So if selecting for physical attributes, I see it being more around aesthetics than athletics.

    And they can select for intelligence, but they'd have to figure out how to not increase mental issues that correlate with intelligence. It's a pretty complicated relationship. And intelligence + education opportunities only gets so far without personality and random chance. Heck, I could point to some rich people who don't seem to value intelligence at all.

    If I could select for one thing, I would select for a strong immune system. Make a solid physical foundation for a person to build on and make their life of their own decisions.

  • The 1998 one. If you do search it out, make sure to go for the Director's Cut. The theatrical release has a voiceover in the first few minutes that spoils the whole movie.

    One of the few movies where the Director's Cut substantially changes things for the better.

  • No. And I would not stop at teens or daughters either. No exposure to him at any age, of any gender, period. I wouldn't want them exposed to threat of assault and rape. I also wouldn't want them learning anything from a person like Trump or those Trump surrounds himself with.

    Trump's sons may be a little more savvy when it comes to not bragging about their crimes in public, but you know they are also rapists raised and encouraged by a rapist. Even if they haven't directly committed a rape yet, they are ok with it and think it's their right.

    Then beyond Trump and sons, letting kids visit grandpa Trump means letting them near Hegseth, RFK Jr, Stephen Miller, Vance. Absolutely, no.

  • I was responsible for hiring some folks for a commercial spot. So yes, I literally picked them out of a binder the company had based on looks. Then we slapped fake glasses and white coats on them to ugly them up into the world's sexiest scientists. That day felt like it could have easily turned into a porno set.

  • MPDG is wish-fulfillment for the loser male protagonist. MPDG's are one-dimensional and quirky in just such a way to make the messy, aimless, socially inept male lead somehow attractive to them. The male is possibly on the spectrum (more likely just an asshole), the MPDG is void of real personality.

    A male protagonist dating a MPDG is like him dating his imaginary friend.

  • Health issues due to paternal age are a lot more difficult to do genetic testing for compared to issues tied to maternal age. If planning to use his sperm, consider speaking with a genetic counselor and have some serious conversations about what it looks like if you have a baby with certain health issues.

  • No, I live relatively lean already. 65% would mean cutting down to rice-and-beans type diet, no Internet, no investment into hobbies, no travel.

    Also, there's inflation. At 30 years old I could expect to live another 40+ years. And 65% of today's dollars is going to get less and less valuable as the years go on.

  • Weatherproofing to whatever degree needed. I check around exterior doors and windows, replace seals and sweeps, and put the cling wrap on windows if needed before it gets really cold.

    Change all locks so prior occupants can't have access.

    Snow scoop and salt since you mention the Canadian winter.

    Door viewer for the front door. I am currently in a rental with a metal door I can't drill through and I HATE not being able to see who's at the door.

    I skipped cameras and just went with door/window alarms. Easy to setup. Less expensive to buy and maintain. Also easy to move and install elsewhere once I find a place that works better. My threat model for home invasion is also quite low.

  • I'm going to skip over the "find a hobby that gets you outside the house" because I assume you will have thought of this and/or others will elaborate in the comments.

    So my attempt at novel advice is not to sleep on online relationships. If your rural community is too small to support a group in your niche interest, find a group online. Be active in the group, asking and contributing, joining and volunteering. You may find it's still 100:1 people you interact with to people you form any sort of lasting relationship with, but that's not really any different than IRL.

    One of my sister's longest lasting friendships is with someone she met playing an online Horse Girl^TM game in the 00s. The game has been defunct for a decade, but they stayed friends. They only met in person for the first time when the friend was getting married. You never know when our weirdness vibes with someone else's weird; it's a beautiful thing. She values that online-origin friendship just as much as any IRL-origin friendship.
