  • Before sinking any time into reading this monstrosity, some context on the author. Gail Heriot is a retired professor who for the last few years has been cashing in on her rantings against "the woke regime". A member of the Federalist Society. And she's actually in favor of Trump's appointment of McMahon to Secretary of Education and subsequent destruction of the Department.

The article is also freakin' long.

  • *Will get

Idk, I have some things I wouldn't get rid of if I found their designer/maker was a horrible person. But I wouldn't necessarily buy them again.

I can't think of anything I wouldn't try to avoid buying new. There's too many alternates available.

  • I can't call it a failure. Fun was had. Goals diverged. We split quite amicably and remain in occasional contact. 10/10, would break up with them again.

  • Local city sub, it's the best place for news and events. I have dwindled down on posting or commenting, trying to find alternatives so I can fully drop it. Unfortunately, Facebook is still heavily used for events and I'll take Reddit over Facebook.

  • Assault. Does this question ever wind up with answers that don't hit the bottom?

Despite the normal safety measures + an intentional lack of flirting when the vibes weren't there, public space, no booze on first meeting, split the check so there are no "implications", no physical contact. Dude didn't like hearing no as I wanted to head to my car and leave. Fortunately, it was in public and he tried to keep it low-key but I had deep bruises on my arm for a while.

  • A second opinion is an option. And a better one than a bunch randos on the internet who don't know anything but that you're questioning your doctor's recommendation.

  • Quality control and honest labeling type laws, similar to what we expect for food and beer.

Laws around operating vehicles and such while under the influence, similar to alcohol.

  • I hope it isn't hashed 👉👈

  • Mine scrolls to down to other article titles, which click into similar page with email address prompt and more article titles.

  • Must sign up with email to read :/

Corporate greed also wants my email address so they can resell it to other corporate asshats.

Maybe I need to go further than Lemmy and get back into Usenet newsgroups. It's been a decade-plus and I'm sure it's more civil there.

  • Yeah, that's how convection and radiation work. Do I notice it? No. Do I care? No. It's hot as balls with or without the neighbors house next door, I'll be running fans and the a/c regardless.

If you're asking for the engineering of it all, you're looking for study materials from Heat Transfer courses, keywords: convection, radiation, R-value, emissivity.

  • Childhood memories blending several computers into one hazy memory. I am nearly certain it was the Amiga that had animation software that was so intuitive I was able to make simple little things when I was like 5 years old. Like one image morphing into another on endless loop.

  • I hum it off and on for literally years. Pretty sure I have hummed a bar of "my milkshake brings the boys to the yard" in public dozens if not hundreds of times.

I don't know any lyrics beyond that hook and I couldn't even tell you the artist/group. If I stopped to think why that song, it might bother me. So I don't think about it.

  • So services like Incogni are using people who are looking to have their personal data removed, to harvest their personal data. Shocked, I tell you. Shocked.

  • I thought of a similar analogy that I used successfully today in conversation.

When I lift weights and do a squat, my ankle mobility limits me. If I wear lifting shoes with a bit of a heel on them, I bypass that limitation and can more efficiently work my legs, back, etc, the actual focus of the lift. I might still work ankle mobility with other exercises, but not while squatting.

Calculators get past the arithmetic (ankle mobility) quickly so that the real target, the problem with new, higher level math concepts (big muscle groups), are the focus. Arithmetic skills can still be drilled elsewhere as needed.

Whereas LLMs to write essays can be like not doing the squats at all and just hooking a motor up to move the bar up and down. No low level skills drilling and no targeting high level concept gains achieved.

  • I don't know that's a good assumption anymore. These students are probably the ones who had zoom from home "school" through formative years, with Chromebooks pushed on them before that. Schools were dropping handwriting from curriculum long before LLM/agentic forms of AI.

Heck, I was graduating high school around the time the first iPhones were coming out and I barely wrote. It was maybe 1-2 essays per school year max, not exactly enough for robust skill development. Exams were almost all multiple choice or 1-2 word short answers at most to make grading more efficient.

  • Also how I water some of my plant, setting them in a pan of water to soak up from the bottom rather than water from above down onto the topsoil.

My aunt, age 65+, calls it "butt chugging" instead of the more common "bottom watering". I had the pleasure of seeing her use the term in front of her two adult gay sons this past weekend. Valiant efforts made to keep their faces straight.

  • Didn't expect such a real answer.

The legit app I pay real money for was non-functional yesterday so I sailed the seas for a stream of Mexico v Ecuador and made the mistake of glancing at the chat as I went to mute the annoying "pop" sound from each new post. Sweet bebe jeebus that was a horrible half second.

  • Nope, I was one specifically not calling you a rapist. You go from head over heels with this ex to facing rape allegations and loss of all friends to being ready to propose in a matter of a month.

This is me as brutally candid internet stranger who doesn't care about being your friend - you might want to slow down a tick and get some therapy before you charge into another frantic, unstable, even dangerous relationship. Jumping out of an abusive relationship and immediately into a new relationship is one of the worst things to do, giving yourself no time to heal and get your head on right.

I'll block you now if you prefer. It bums me out to see a fellow human fight so hard for shit relationships.

  • I really hope this isn't with the woman who alleged you raped her. I think you would bother be better off forgetting the other even exists.

User tags exist. My tag for you is getting quite the few descriptors tacked on.
