  • Essentially.

The fediverse, small-web, ubb-boards, xda, and parts of the darkweb, as well as places like 4chan all belong to a sort-of bound community.

Facebook, Google, Tiktok, Instagram etc make up the mainsteam internet with Tumblr and Reddit on the sidelines.

It's getting worse, it even trickles down to software choices and piracy. Choose Linux and trust the community, run Kodi and fight constant update breakage on Youtube and corporate streaming solutions when Jellyfin and samba shares just work?

At what point does their world of influence become seemingly worse than ours by default and everyone just ignores them? Will the giants allow themselves to be ignored? I believe they will eventually make self-sufficiency impossible. Somehow, some day, you won't have any of these choices and everyone will be nickle and dimed to death until the entire internet is an unskippable full-screen ad.

From some mobile-only average working Joes out there, that's all it already is.

  • I wish every single thing didn't get propped up as a paradigm shift into the fucking future.

Crypto and Ai can just exist as tools and not he hyped up to infinity as something they aren't, but lo and behold, walstreet and the tech oligarchs need new products and "wave of the futures" to dangle over everyone's face from fad to fad to fad to fad.

"Hey, wait a minute guys. Why don't we stop with the accelerationist bullshit and make people's lives better?"

    "lol as-if!"

  • "Do you need to transcode video?

Then leave Intel the fuck alone."

Been my rule for 20 years, and it's worked good so far.

  • slaps bass

  • Trans person:

    3D prints your ruling

shoots it with a 3D printed gun

  • already know who's in the files

have to wait for our government to incrininate itself for it to be official

Some alien race is going to dig this shit up in 2000 years and go "fuckin seriously!?"

  • I used a Oneplus 6T on PMOS/Phosh for a week.

It ain't ready. I work in an iffy area as far as coverage is concerned and I missed a lot of messages. My 7pro on Lineage can deal with it, but sometimes I'd turn the OP6T on, and find networking off entirely with it working, or vice versa.

Software-wise, if you know and comfortably use a Linux laptop, you'll be at home. Having said that, realize that 90% of people won't be. You will absolutely have to use the terminal and will be entirely lost and confused if you don't already have experience with the system.

Also software-wise, know that most Linux software is made with the idea that you're not sipping data. Open Jellyfin for the 40th time and it will redownload the same images,... for the 40th time, or a random firefox tab sipping data off of you 24/7 without you even being aware of it. Laptops are different, and it's what the system thinks it is, so it's going to perform that way, not like the phone that's stapled and duct taped to it.

  • I don'

  • I wonder if it isn't still just a piss in the wind. All Microsoft has to do is require something propretary and the US government and their customers will just roll it out. I don't fee like we have the ability to choose with our wallets anymore. If they can't win fairly, Microsoft will cheat and collude with other companies to make them your only option.

  • If you're hoarding 1 billion dollars, you're pretty evil by default.

Increase perceived evility by a factor of 1 for every subsequent billion.

  • the collaborative world works off of demand. Pocket laptops and linux phones have been a nice distraction for long enough. They may soon become more of a saving grace.

I'm not saying you'll be able to run Spyware Simulator 2000 on PostmarketOS. I'm more saying that any secondary device you use for foss software will be more focused upon as an actual decent alternative for getting work done without being spied on by capitalist nazis.

These devices can run web browsers. That's 80% of your needs already taken care of and we haven't even left Firefox.

    CARRY TWO PHONES??!!

    What will the neighbors think!?

  • I readily await the visibility and interest this will give mobile linux development.

  • Bribing people with technologies that do nothing. Since cost and worth aren't really quantifiable with some of these technologies, all of these actions might as well be seen as just shallow bribes and favors to those in power.

  • spying on them sounds likely to me.

Grok is going to be a fascist taddletale for everything done on a computer or phone.

  • Roll Out Grok ASAP

Ok, LLMs aren't really my bread and butter, but what exactly would it be rolled out to, and to do what?

Is it all just smoke and mirrors to cut Musk a check?

  • I'm glad I voted for Harris and I'm not complicit in shipping someone's family member to a concentration camp or helping a pedophile get elected.

Some would argue this as a bad move, but considering Gaza will be a parking lot by December anyway, congrats, benchwarmers. You played yourselves.

Some lawyer on Capitol Hill: "Hmm..."

    Not if, when.

Who knows, the same demand may be given of certain other federated social media sites in a few months.

  • Don't feel pressured by me. If you feel pressured yourself, it may be a form of projected guilt.

If you don't find privacy and security important enough to give up your connectivity or usability, that's perfectly fine. I don't have to live with it.
