    But if I want to keep my Proton VPN connection active, I don't think what you're describing is doable.

    That would mean being connected to two vpns at once wouldn't it?

    EDIT : i get it now, if I configure it on the router, I won't have to connect to two vpns on the same device

  • You're right, all manufacturers have their issues. I have a hard time finding one where you feel like it's a safe bet. Which is why I'm leaning toward framework, but the company is young and has far less experience, so it's also a risk..

  • I would never again recommend MSI.. I bought a 3000€ MSI Creator 3 years ago for work :

    • the hinges are breaking apart
    • some metal part on the size broke
    • the keyboard letter are scraping off
    • the microphone on Linux is unusable because of the fans

    Reaplcing the keyboard requires a full body replacement, which costs like 300€ 🙃

    I've also had some very bad experiences with a entry price gaming msi for someone in my family.

  • What I meant behind federation was that the registration process can be hard to understand. But you're right, after passing this step, you don't really notice federation.

    As for the self fulfilling prophecy, I think you're right, which is why I still try to nudge my friends towards mastodon / pixelfed. I still believe in these projects, but I also don't think Bluesky will be too detrimental to their growth.

  • I used to think so too, but talking about it with a few friends that genuinely gave Mastodon a shot, I changed my mind.

    Federation (not easily understandable) + Lack of users (and thus content) are the main reasons.

  • Maybe OP isn't properly informed of the energy usage and climate impact of his lifestyle. Some countries do very little to teach this unfortunately.

    In France, a few years ago, there was a very large campaign for this exact topic to prevent energy usage spikes that could have brought the grid down. It also served as a way to teach people that 19 is just fine in the winter.

  • In winter it's a very normal thing to be a little cold. If every household on the planet aimed for 26 while it's 0 outside, the energy needed would to heat up would be gigantic.

    As someone else said, you just need some warm clothes and socks and you're fine at 19 degrees.

    Edit : not a parent, so I don't know if it'd fine for children

    I have it installed on my raspberry pi to run Jellyfin and a few other apps, and it's been mostly stable. However I've had the same thoughts as you, so I can confirm that you won't be able to learn as much with it.

    Some of my other needs are hosted on a VPS without CasaOS, and that's where I was able to learn most of what I know. It's also where I spent the most time configuring and fixing incompatibilities.

    I'd suggest that you keep CasaOS for the things you want to depend on, and start learning on another system without CasaOS by installing apps you're interested to try out. This way you'll learn about reverse proxies, certificates, docker, etc, without being afraid to mess up your current setup.

  • Sure but.. It's still a really good advice and I'm glad someone posted it. I rarely rake away leaves for reasons like this, and this gives me one extra reason to not do so.

    That doesn't mean you're wrong, but we can all be right : fight the important battles for large scale effects while enjoying the small scale effects of individual actions.
