Nolan's a highly talented auteur cinematographier.

He's doing Magical Realism with SciFi pastiche, he's always got a great cast, infinity zillion dollar budget with stunning special effects.

Absolutely nothing clever or interesting to say with his work. It all ends at the level of two DudeBros snorting a line of coke and pretending to be smart.

Solaris was genuinely very difficult to follow. As an avante garde Sci Fi piece, incredible. You can draw a straight line from Solaris to a hundred Star Trek and Dr Who and Battle Star Galactica episodes. Absolutely littered with cool ideas.

As... entertainment? It was a bumpy road. The execution was rough, even by the standards of the era.

Okay, come on. The trips out to the three candidate worlds were cool. It was a very slow build up. And then the post Black Hole climax was silly.

But the middle of the movie was good.

Well, there's your problem. Woody Harlson was the one that delivered on TD.

Where, for example, a grouchy misanthropic isolated farmer is the ONLY person who can pilot this spaceship and save humanity, so he does it but grumbles the whole time.

In fairness, the enthusiastic astronauts were all reckless, foolhardy, narcissists who nearly flub the whole mission.

Going through a black hole but it's just a fisheye lens having gravel flung at it, because you forgot to budget for this particular special effect

But don't worry, you can absolutely pass through the Event Horizon in a man made spacecraft just so long as you have the singular force that defines the shape of the universe: ~~gravity~~ Love.

Trust But Verify is a good policy regardless of where your code comes from.

"AI" code is still human code in some capacity. Human code is what it was trained on. What would you do with a module you grabbed off GitHub or a script you found on Discord? Hopefully the same thing.

I mean, if you're curious and you're diligent, you can learn from what the AI chugs out. Skills only stagnate when you trust the AI blindly.

I'd say the bigger problem is that when you're outsourcing junior coder work (even the tedious stuff) to a machine, you're not investing in new junior coders.

The courts generally recognize the time-value of money. If you steal $1 and make $.10 on it, then you've deprived the person you stole from of the same ROI. In fact, you've demonstrated the deprived returns by investing it.

Unless they allow someone to collect for potential gains

So, back to the car example. If you deprive someone of a car and that costs them their job, you're liable for the wages they lost when they lost their job.

Not... quiet. These are punitive damages - above and beyond the assessed monetary damages inflicted by Jones.

As a comparison, let's say you own a car. Your neighbor, in a fit of piqued, drops a cartoon anvil on the hood and totals it. The car costs you $30k to replace. And there's a second order cost on you for not having your own car that you can calculate out to be another $30k.

But the jury doesn't believe a $60k award is sufficient to justify the harm your neighbor caused. So they want to assess "punitive" addition costs in excess of the discrete monetary damage. They cannot assign a number bigger than $750k for this claim.

If your neighbor can come up with a way to make $750k + 30k + 30k of demolishing your car, then they have an economic incentive to do it.

But if the neighbor burns down your $800k house? Or drives a Killdozer through your $1.5M front office? Or puts a 757 through one of your twin towers? Then there's a much higher liability.

Fine if you've got more time than money, I guess.

Plenty of people are impotent or agnostic.

The "you're either with us or you're with the Terrorists" line is some spicy (fascist) rhetoric, but hollow in practice.
