The degree of privilege required to even entertain making a living as a YouTube starlet is astronomical.
And, again, free video hosting and distribution! That's why 99% of people put videos in YouTube. You can host something and pass it around without needing a self-hosted solution to manage it.
Enlisted recruits are barely more than indentured servants under modern US law. There's really no depravity the state can't subject you to while on deployment. And no way to escape from mandatory re-enlistment under Stop-Loss policy.

But that's the hitch with YouTube. It's not just not-paying-you. It's also hosting your media for free. What you're really trading on isn't revenue from YouTube, it's free hosting services. And then you need to monetize the content yourself, if you want to generate an income.
Case in point - Ms Rachel isn't getting rich off her (wildly popular) YouTube channel nearly so much as her toy line and her celebrity appearance fees. Similarly, guys like Tucker Carlson and Alex Jones do commercial line reads right in the middle of their shows, fully independent of what YouTube injects. Adam Friedland and Justin Rozniak do paywalled episodes through Patreon. Mr. Beast sells shitty snack food.
Everyone who has made a living on YouTube has ultimately collected the bulk of that money from outside YouTube.

Gen z & α aren't going to have the luxuries of cheap(ish) real estate, surplus fossil fuels, abundant exploitable labor and materials, or a financial sector squatting on the esophagus of international trade. We broke all the post-Cold War levers of international control. We're very likely going to be dealing with one or two more self-inflicted pandemics, if RFK Jr has his way. And our most lucrative satraps - Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Canada - aren't going to be in a position to prop us up if we tank the global economy again, like we did in '08, '14, and '20.
Maybe this will curb our worst impulses. Maybe Gen z won't be as inclined to carpet bomb a Middle Eastern country or a South American coastline if we've long since burned ourselves out of anti-ballistic interceptors and seaworthy aircraft carriers. Or maybe they'll reinvent fascism from first principles and just invade Ottowa because it's easier. Idfk.
But I do think we're far downstream of Allen Dulles doing regime change across half the world from a smoke-filled room in Langley. We're far downstream of white flight into suburban sprawl and every middle-income family owning a fleet of SUVs and everyone having a childhood memory of vacationing in Disney World and this one weird guy becoming a billionaire because he's the first guy in the country who thought about importing screwdrivers from China. The next generations are not going to have the raw materials to replicate what prior generations performed. They will have to behave differently by necessity.
I don't believe you can go back more than five years and find per-TB rates under the current rate. Ten years is straight out. Twenty years is laughable.
Meanwhile, PBS has an annual operating budget of around $340M. They can afford to manage their own data, at the scale of tens of terrabytes. And I guarantee you that whatever they're paying Iron Mountain to host the data is multiples the cost of self-hosting.

The Bush/Obama Era was a historical string of policy failures by both major parties. They left enormous populations of deeply dissatisfied Americans in their wake, many of whom were ripe for exploitation.
If you're a multi-billion dollar broadcast parent company doing long term storage for a 70-year archive catalog, you can spring for new. Maybe even go Big Fancy and get some RAID drives and tape backups, for extra redundancy.
