    and sometimes it's because farming in the area hasn't been competitive in decades, and cannot keep up with imports even if they cut out middle men and even if they get subsidised like hell, making you wish the government would just rip the band aid of instead of tying up workers in this industry without a future for another decade, food security my ass, what's the point of that if we aren't feeding people at all and instead turning perfectly good vegetables into bio-fuel since energy companies pay more for them then our starving population can?

  • 1 Semantics, but that doesn't sound "inherently" sexist to me.

    2 I'm pretty sure it just makes more comedic sense to put the unexpected interpretation on the right (or women's side), so the "bad side" is different depending on the topic. I personally see this meme more often with the man being a surface level fan of something with the women being unexpectedly deep into the fandom. Like, among the earliest known edits (according to knowyourmeme) is the man just liking sports games with the women liking soulslikes.

    A sting from a honey bee is familiar to many because of its world-wide distribution. The sting can be reliably provoked, and standardized, making it an ideal experimental stimulus. Furthermore, its rating as the center point of the Schmidt pain scale suggests it may be a useful standard. The present study therefore used honey bee stings to determine whether sting location impacts painfulness, and how painfulness varies by location.

    Reads as: honey bees are cheap to acquire and I ain't letting no hornet sting my private parts.

  • Inspired by the Schmidt Sting Pain Index, Michael L. Smith did us all a favour and answered the obvious follow up question on which body parts hurt the most when stung. He had honey bee guards sting him in 25 locations, multiple times to account for variability, over 38 days.

    Results:

    The three least painful locations were the skull, middle toe tip, and upper arm (all scoring a 2.3). The three most painful locations were the nostril, upper lip, and penis shaft (9.0, 8.7, and 7.3, respectively).

    He and Schmidt were awarded with a shared Ig Noble Price for their efforts.

Christmas time still starts in December/1st advent for me, although some houses have wintery decorations up the day they remove the Halloween ones, and the city has made some preparations for the coming Christmas markets today. Christmas markets are where people go buy Glühwein/mulled wine in a Christmassy atmosphere, a hot drink just tastes better in cold weather than in one's house (we drink it there as well, of course, can't enjoy Christmas sober).

    Advent traditions include an advent wreath, which is still really Christian in nature, and advent calendar, which has become entirely commercialised around toy brands and chocolate.

    The gift giving and the first proper look at the tree is done on Christmas Eve's Evening, after the religious members of the family went to Church. That evening we eat either raclette or hot pot/Chinese fondue, the other meal then a week later at Silvester. We have started to eat a locally sourced Christmas goose on Christmas day recently.

    Hate for children's media for being... for children has really come a long way. Now we hate them for legitimate reasons, like peppa pig for being bloody monarchists and Bluey for being Australian.

    You said you use the formal you more than Germans, but less than the "German speaking world". It's a bit weird to use that phrase to mean "any German speakers except Germans" I think, especially in the way you wrote it.

    No but seriously, what did you mean to say? Germany make up roughly 8/10 German speakers, so "most of the German speaking world, except Germany" doesn't really mean anything to me.
