  • I remember watching a documentary about the chunnel back in the early 00s and the narrators highlighted how it's enabled day-tripping to the other country for some folks, and spoke with a British couple who went to France to do some shopping that day

  • I live a few hours drive from Chicago and have family in LA, I would love the option to take an autotrain to visit family. The ability to bring my car to visit folks in such a car dependant place would make the cost really make a ton of sense, especially if we opted to only drive one direction and take the train the other direction.

We're actually planning on driving out this thanksgiving (partly decided by cost and partly by making an added stop to visit family in Arizona which Amtrak and flying would both make extremely expensive in comparison) it also helps that our car was totaled by hail damage this year so since it now has no resale value despite being fairly new and fairly low mileage, there's just no incentive to avoid putting tons of miles on it anymore. But if we could pay a couple thousand dollars for the experience of riding the rails just one direction, we probably would go that route

  • Mumford and Sons is currently running a tour by rail using Amtrak's services!

But I've also heard of private groups pooling together to buy an old passenger car and keeping it maintained and up to whatever the current Amtrak requirements are so that they can do this regularly. Alternatively there's several private companies who you can rent and charter a car or several with if you don't want to commit long term to owning a railcar. I've specifically seen this one on private charter before for some model railroad events: https://261.com/cedar-rapids/

  • Amtrak does have the "auto train" which runs from just outside DC to just outside Orlando. You load your car on the train and ride the train rather than driving that distance. It's apparently really popular with both snowbirds as well as vacationers

  • It's absolutely goofy. Honestly it plays almost identically to Theme Hospital. I played both around the same time and I can't remember what was from which game now

  • Being barefoot (specifically not even wearing socks) for some of the day actually made a noticable improvement on a few funky things about my feet that bothered me. So maybe those weird toe shoe people were onto something after all...

  • Yup post ride ice cream to as a treat to cool down and replenish sugar after sweating a bunch. I otherwise avoid treats/excessive sugar, but something about ice cream after an intense workout just is amazing

  • Both of these were in the last couple of weeks, so....

  • I have a few things I've picked up recently.

    1. A couple of years ago I quit drinking coffee, so now I almost exclusively drink water. I find the water first thing in the morning is a brilliant way to wake up
    2. In the evenings I go for a bike ride, giving me some fresh air, sunlight and exercise. Some nights I go for a 20 mile intercity route, some nights I just do an easy 5 mile route in town
    3. After my bike ride I'll eat some ice cream, shower, then relax with a book in bed (my phone stays on my dresser and out of reach from the bed) before going to sleep

The right morning routine and evening routine really makes my days feel so much more fulfilling even if I haven't been particularly productive that day

  • I just had two opportunities say that they won't be filling the positions at all, so that probably doesn't bode well...

  • Sounds like exactly what a bot would say! Now prove your humanity by clicking all of the traffic lights in this image...err that one doesn't work? Uh...You shall prove your humanity by listening to this audio clip and transcribing...that one too huh? Now you shall...count the Rs is Strawberry? Really? Man this is a really dumb future we've found ourselves in

  • Part of the reason for those who won't accept anything but cash is purely because they're not actually homeless but instead learned that they can make more begging than they can working a crap fast food job for example. I've even heard of groups of people coordinating their efforts so they can make sure they aren't oversaturating a given part of town or in a some cases pooling the takings at the end of the day to help even out the inevitable variability

  • I've just been thoroughly unimpressed by all of the American car brands. Crap vehicles with lousy interiors the lot of them.

  • It's a content filter evasion for "weed". Trips me up every time one of my online friends uses it, I go "IUD? No that doesn't make sense. Ood from Doctor Who? Nah. Some kinda French thing? Oh yeah it's weed"

  • There's numerous ethical reasons for the abolishment of capital punishment. The two the stand out the most to me are:

    1. Wrongful convictions - People have been convicted and executed and later exonerated with new evidence. People are wrongfully convicted with way too much frequency. It is far better if the person is still alive to find some quality of life after the state takes years from them than for them to have their name cleared after the state has executed them.
    2. Is the purpose of a given sentence deterrence, rehabilitation or state-sponsored revenge? I am of the opinion that criminal convictions should be focused entirely on rehabilitation. Take the person out of the situation and environment that caused them to commit the crime, focus on providing them education and services so that they can better help themselves avoid recidivism, and ultimately release them in a timely manner for a second try as a member of society but now with the tools and knowledge they lacked before to handle the bad situations that pulled them into the mess. Save locking people up for decades for those who re-offend and continue to commit heinous crimes without remorse

State-sponsored revenge will never provide justice, and it has been proven repeatedly that severe sentences do not deter severe crimes. Neither are paths to justice, only paths to more incarcerated people

  • On take your daughter to work day of all days?!

Edit: Tired brain mixed up neurotoxin and nerve gas

  • It also is in many US states. Only 16 states have capital punishment and have executed anyone in the last 10 years, and 22 states do not have any form of capital punishment

Per Wikipedia, Michigan was the first English speaking government to formally abolish the death penalty, abolishing it in 1847 (10 years after the state joined the union), shortly followed by Wisconsin in 1853 (5 years after the state joined the union) and Maine in 1887 (67 years after the state joined the union)

  • See I would have more problems with cats chilling on the keyboard than folks closing the lid or unplugging it
