  • I lost a ton of weight this way too. then I developed an eating disorder. the whole idea of "if I starve myself then I can eat whatever I want" is pretty much the origin story of binge eating

  • tried all the bullshit in these comments, nothing worked long term. was still miserable and hated myself. progressed into an eating disorder. only thing that ended up working was to seek psychological help. learning intuitive eating helped stop the binges. I let go of the obsession with food, obsession with weight, obsession with image. accepting yourself as you are is the only way to change. fancy that.

    the question of "what do I do with my life" is a ridiculous thing to offload onto someone else. it's your life, not mine. the only thing I can say is how I came about my own decisions, and for me that starts with recognizing when something lucrative looks fucking boring

  • that part is tautological. if the almighty is perfection, then benevolence is defined by it, not by us. so the only way one can consistently hold that belief is to admit that we are the imperfection. we are the disease, we are punished. i guess that's why i dont believe that shit lol

  • Probably the belief that there (isn't) some kind of omnipotent god interested in guiding our affairs. It's not like I'd ever be able to know. How would I cope? Pretty easily. It'd be comforting. That's a pretty good reason to doubt it, since I'm biased in favor of it.

    The thing is, I'm not picking this one because it's the most likely one, but because all of the other "core" beliefs are either completely subjective judgments that can't be "wrong" or are flexible enough that it doesn't really matter.

  • Yeah, it's really frustrating and quite ironic that pop culture keeps using this obscure scientific reference, that they don't really understand in its intended context, to describe something that really ought be plainly said: that we all have a tendency to overinflate our competence. if anything Dunning-Krueger showed that only the most seasoned experts judge themselves modestly. (and even then we'd likely only find their modesty in that particular area of expertise). it's a commentary on all of us!

    But no, people name-drop this research just to dunk on people and feel smugly superior. (and I am glad I agree with the politics of the intellectual in the OP, that means it's okay and I'm a bit more competent too!) ugh. I cringe every time i read someone say Dunning-Krueger.
