  • I think it’s optimistic to think they would even care about a boycott now. By volunteering to cross the lines that Anthropic wouldn’t cross, they’ve achieved Military Industrial Complex status. It doesn’t matter if you don’t pay for a subscription, you’ll fund them with your tax dollars whether you want to or not. Their mass surveillance tools are too valuable to let them fail, so they’ll get propped up and bailed out no matter what.

  • The cup knocked onto the ground is a nice touch.

  • If lights are flickering when you record videos, you probably need to change the settings on your camera to match your country’s grid frequency. Almost every video recording device will have a 50/60Hz setting somewhere.

  • That’s just because you’re in the pocket of Big Boob.

Yeah, that tracks. So much about iOS UI/UX has gotten worse in that time, mostly by trying to “fix” things that worked just fine as they were.

  • Yeah, I dunno what to say besides that it happened to me twice. Probably close to 25 years ago while upgrading my 12GB HDD to a 80GB Seagate Barracuda, I decided to try running both drives together for a whopping 92GB of storage. Whatever jumper combination I tried first ended up with one of the drives not being recognized, so I tried another combination, either both master or both slave, and the control board on the 12GB drive let out the smoke and that drive was never able to be recognized again. I don’t remember exactly what happened the second time, but I know it happened twice because I felt really stupid about not learning my lesson from the first time. Not saying there couldn’t have been something else going on, but they had keyed IDE headers that couldn’t have been reversed and no other issues until I tried the incompatible jumper combination.

  • And if you tried to run more than one HDD and got those jumpers wrong, it would let the magic smoke out of one of your drives.

  • All true, except he’s in Queensland, Australia.

  • I’m not mad. I’m glad they’re showing some semblance of backbone for once. I just think it’s a poorly chosen cliche for him to use the “your grandfather’s Democratic Party” bit, when the party of the past didn’t have the cowardice issues that the current one has had this very same year.

  • No, my grandfather’s Democratic Party instituted the New Deal. The Democratic Party that “just rolled over” was you just a few months ago.

  • I didn’t intend to suggest that Carl Sagan invented climate science in 1985, just that the political conversation has been clear and ongoing for decades (indeed, longer than 40 years), yet the opposing narratives continue to claim it’s unproven, and the progress remains insufficient.

It’s so easy to lose sight among all the gish-galloping nonsense around these topics just how long the problem has been almost fully understood and very clearly articulated. It’s absolutely devastating to think about how catastrophically the world has failed to meet the challenge he describes here in the intervening decades.
