  • Should the hobby continue to be about both the act of printing and tinkering with printers, or is there a reasonable place for people who want “3D printing” as a hobby but not “3D printers” as a hobby. As part of this, is it okay for a company to lock down its firmware and prevent people from using their printer over a network without going through their software first?

Bambu Lab has made remarkable progress in “mainstreaming” 3D printing but they’ve done so at the expense of a lot of the “soul” of the space. Unlike many of their consumer-facing predecessors and competitors, they are closed-source and proprietary. They make a good product, but you don’t get to have control over it the same way you do with other brands. And that just means other brands are likely to follow suit, now that Bambu Lab has shown it to be an effective strategy.

I mourn the loss of common purpose the hobby once had, but at the same time I do think it’s a natural progression for something new and complex to eventually become consumer-grade. Look at how computers have evolved into rectangles we keep in our pockets.

  • I’m trying to understand what you’re saying. Would you say that someone who identifies as nonbinary is not transgender? If so, does that mean that transgender only exists within the gender binary?

  • That’s what distributed computing is, after all. Like Folding@Home.

  • Weird. I’ve not yet seen this on my Teams. It would piss me off if I did, but then again Teams pisses me off all the time anyway.

  • George Washington inoculated the army against smallpox in the revolutionary war.

These idiots don’t realize vaccinating the military is as American as it gets.

  • “And St. Atilla raised the hand grenade on high, saying, ‘O Lord, bless this Thy hand grenade that with it Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits in Thy mercy.’ And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs, and sloths, and carp, and anchovies, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats…”

  • when sharks first evolved Saturn had no rings

Or at least, didn’t have its current rings. I could be wrong but couldn’t it have torn apart other moons to create a different set of rings that then degraded over time?

  • Yeah. Apple is plenty evil but not having ads is, generally, part of their “premium feel.” There are exceptions to this, unfortunately, especially recently.

But I definitely don’t regret doing a factory reset on my LG TV and hooking up an Apple TV.

  • Fuck Nestle, obviously. But as an American limited to Hershey’s sad excuse for KitKat, I would totally steal fuckloads of Nestle KitKat.

  • Thanks for the reply! I hope something similar gets developed. As much as I like multi-toolhead solutions, the nozzle-changer seems so much more compact.

  • I would argue that Vorons are more capable than say a Baubu, but I digress.

Depends on the Bambu and what capability you’re after, doesn’t it?

I know Bambu is evil, but I have to admit the H2C with its nozzle-changer is sexy. Give it a couple of AMSs and you get 7 materials with no purging. That’s a capability I don’t think a Voron has (though please, correct me if I’m wrong).

  • When I was younger and didn’t know what cilantro was, I couldn’t understand why no one in my family agreed with me that stink bugs smelled like, “some kind of herb.”

When I finally figured out what cilantro was and why I didn’t like it, I went digging into stink bug stink and realized precisely why.

  • you are surrounded by people who are in the exact same position.

Or, due to physicality and flexibility, some new positions!

  • I have to watch this, thank you!

  • 100% of exonerated space criminals are lesbians.

  • Fool me…you can’t get fooled again.

  • It’s because he was unstuck in time. Slaughterhouse V was actually autobiographical.

  • No doubt there are health concerns with vaping. But man, it’s such an improvement over smoking that it was absolutely worth it for me.

And my bowel issues only started a year or so after I stopped vaping, for what it’s worth. 🤣
