  • High five, me too!

At that age I also used to do speed run little programs on the display computers in department stores. I'd write a little prompt welcoming a shopper and ask them their name. Then a response that echoed back their name in some way. If I was in a good mood it was "Hi [name]!". If I was in a snarky mood it was "Fuck off [name]!" The goal was to write it in about 30 seconds, before one of the associates came over to see what I was doing.

  • My wife grew up on a ranch. She was very offended when we were in the UK and she realized the term 'cowboy' referred to incompetent trades people who consistently did bad jobs. It made me laugh though.

  • This brings up another facet: when it comes to ideological biases it's all subjective.

I consider lemmy.world slightly left of center overall, but again with important caveats that some communities within it are pretty left wing and some are pretty right wing. But maybe to someone pretty far on the left of the political spectrum the instance seems very right wing, while to someone pretty far to the right it seems like almost everyone are 'rabid pinko commies'.

Basically, things are more complicated than they may look.

  • This probably sounds like a dodge of an answer, but...

It depends on the Lemmy instance. Some are anarchistic, some are very left wing anti-establishment, some are hardcore tankies, and I've heard somewhere there's a right-wing instance? Some hate certain technologies, some love those technologies, etc.

I don't think it's realistic to lump all Lemmy instances (and users) together under a single ideological umbrella. That's like lumping everyone from America or any other county together for their opinions.

  • My rule of thumb has long been:

    1. try to listen to what they say.
    2. if I don't hear/can't understand initially then ask them to repeat it, but only once.
    3. if I still don't hear/can't understand just nod and smile as if I did understand, and listen to the next things they say to try to figure out what I missed in steps 1 and 2. The key is: if you do figure it out that late, mask that revelation and instead pretend you knew along.

You'd be surprised how infrequently I've been called out when going past step 3. I've reached that point a few dozen times over the years. But I've been caught out... maybe once? If they ask a follow-up question I just bullshit my way past it and then try changing the topic.

  • Bingo.

  • "B-but everyone is leaving California!!1!"

To the people saying this: yeah, dream on. Step away from the hard right-wing media and look around. It's a myth.

Yes there are some people leaving the state for places like Texas and Florida (sorry, but fuck knows why!). But there are still a ton of people here in CA, there are still people moving here, and there are still kids being born here. We are a loooong way from a mass exodus of economy crippling proportions.

  • They hate us because they ain't us.

  • Not all white men. Too many of us. But there are still many of us who vehemently don't want to be tarted with that shit brush.

  • Like this administration listens to judges who say things they don't want to hear.

  • Yes, yes they did. But ya know... 'rules for thee but not for me'.

  • But who else is going to micromanage and bully the employees and strut around self-importantly doing jack shit? /s

  • Yeah, not good of them to not share that information.

But for anyone who's wondering, here's a decent article that goes over the shady companies that discretely own most VPNs apps.

Amusingly, and kind of in counterpoint to the guy who you replied to, this article concludes that Proton is actually a solid VPN option that isn't beholden to one of those sketchy VPN-hoarding companies. Though they don't talk about any Israeli influence in Proton TBF. But still, on a general level (excluding the Israel/Palestine thing), Proton seems like one of the better options.

They also recommend Mullvad as a good option. I've never used them, but I've seen mentioned positively in other articles about VPNs.

    ETA: Clarity.

  • Spoiler alert: it was the main clown college in the Roman empire.

    But seriously, that's interesting.

  • Genitalia (supposed to be gen-Italia - an Italian electricity company. They got rid of their web domain they they finally realized.)

  • It's the ExpertSexchange of the 2020s!

  • Was gonna say.. my kids keep accidentally using my profile to watch their videos. YouTube is going to think I'm a teen/child with peak gen alpha brain rot.

  • I've never been to Austin, but I've heard good things about it. Not a fan of Texas in general, didn't like it for many reasons. But Austin sounds different.

All this said, these comedians skewering Austin and Texas as a whole is not the fatal blow they think it is. They sound like douchebags who are so far up their own assholes they are wearing their own tonsils as earrings. The fact that they were following cretin-in-chief Rogan around like lost little puppies further supports this take.

  • I put my IMEI in and it said I was eligible. But then it gets stuck in an infinite loop of support links with no option out (at least when I selected to get a replacement battery). Edit: I got free of the loop, but the nearest place to take my phone into to get the battery replaced is 100 miles away!

I think I'm just going to get a new phone and move on. Not a Pixel though. Fuck this noise. My wife had a Pixel 5a and the motherboard fried itself after a couple of years. Google sent her a Pixel 6a replacement about 2 months later (long after we'd found her a non-Pixel replacement). So I upgraded to that replacement for in a 4a. But now this battery/fire bullshit? I'm done with their shitty products and their shitty support!

  • Surprised she hasn't spun up a crypto coin and fleeced the rubes already.
