  • And here we are, more than a year later, and any time anyone actually calls it by its new name, it’s always followed by (previously Twitter). Hilarious. Because the new name is fucking nonsense

  • Do people who perpetuate this stereotype have cats? Because it seems like they don’t. My cat is psyched and affectionate as hell when I come home. All of my cats have been the same way.

  • FUCK no

  • You think your iPhone isn’t collecting data on you? Is that what you’re saying?

  • They meant that choosing one possible definition and saying it’s what the word means is stupid. Words mean pretty much what everyone agrees they mean. Look at all the words that have basically flipped definitions since their inception. Just because the modern derivative of a word means something literally everyone understands but is slightly different than what it used to mean doesn’t mean the oldest answer is the correct one. Unwad your jock.

  • Eh, I’d disagree. And I think this is where it becomes a matter of taste. When I see it, I read it with the emphasis in my head. It does add something for me. Maybe because I choose to do my writing similarly, that this sort of matters to me. You’re probably right that a lot of people overlook it. To each their own, I guess.

  • There is a reason. The writer is trying to inject the exact tone of this conversation into the writing. If it were written plaintext, the reader could add their own emphasis to the words, and it might come out differently than the artist intended. When I’m making a more passionate point, I put a lot of words in italics—and I use a lot of M dashes. Because it paces exactly what I’m saying to make my point exactly how I want it to sound in your head.

  • Do we really need that? Dating apps have a sort of logic behind their existence: expand your dating pool to meet people you never would have otherwise.

Social media doesn’t really have a purpose like that. It sort of started with corrupt motives, and they’ve only become much more harmful.

  • lol it’s not. That’s the point. It’s all the same sort of companies putting these fucking things out. Google and Facebook are both working on their own AI. It’s been shown over and over how they’re scraping all available data—public or private when available—so why the fuck would a newer tech company be any different? It’s the state of capitalism. The markets are focusing more on hyper focused data, so that’s what any profitable tech company is doing. Invading your fucking privacy.

That’s why it’s not a surprise. Because Facebook and google helped set the trend and determine the current tech market. And that’s the world these new “AI girlfriends” are existing in.

  • Yeah. Saw that one coming.

  • in no universe should that take precedent over the massive quality of life improvements WFH offers for the worker

They don’t give 1/10th of a shit about worker comfort or joy. It’s all about shareholder profits and control. And as the article was saying, about trying to dump blame. The great thing is, again, as stated in the article, that these RTO companies are severely limiting their talent pool. It will start to become clearer and clearer that companies that moved totally WFH retain employees and will see more benefits for their bottom line.

I mean, think about it for two seconds, how can renting office space and equipment and all the office supplies in every office location for one company be justified when all it gives you is a smaller talent pool, less happy workers making productivity sink and and turnover skyrocket, and an excuse when you need it?

It’s just craziness. It’s stupid bosses and rich people sacrificing the worker for…I honestly don’t know what is driving them to do this, because I can’t imagine they are getting any benefit at all.
