  • Some Texas National Guard troops replaced in Illinois after failing to meet standards

  • I'm not pleased they're being deployed, but these guys aren't choosing to go to these places. They signed up for national defense (and not the kind that blows up schools in a desert on the other side of the world) and often helping with major disasters.

    The Texas National Guard absolutely did not sign up for policing cities in Illinois or Oregon, and I'd bet vast majority are not pleased to be there.

  • The only good part of the musical (with the exception, maybe, of the Connected song), is my K-boys dropping some clap back at the end. It's my ring tone for my work and my daughter (because the only time they call instead of text it's because they have some dramas).

  • It's a silly distinction. If you are "going to college/university," you could be going for any number of degree programs, from a Bachelor's Degree, to an Associates Degree, to a Master's Degree, or whatever. The degree program is irrelevant. If you are going to school, and it is a college or university, you are going to college/university.

    I usually quickly respond "you okay?" in a concerned tone.

  • Yes and no.

    I have never had a lust for power. I have never had a desire to do things that people in power abuse their position to do (like nightmare islands, sex with interns, crushing minorities). I don't even have an intense desire for money beyond basic comfort (I would love to have money for a boat right now, but I'm content saving up for it). So corruption for any of that? No.

    However, I am not sure I have the capability of doing good in a proper way. I can't tell if I'd be a Sisko or if I would just fail to achieve any of my aims out of not wanting to do things the wrong way (if you go authoritarian to try to make things better, is that still corrupt or evil?). The world is a fucked up, difficult to navigate place, morally, when you are making decisions for a lot of people.

    So yeah, I could avoid corruption for my own sake, but I don't think I would be able to be a benevolent dictator.

  • What's a sci-fi thing you feel is achievable with our current level of technology that you'd love to see become a thing?

  • The moon base (and/or moon orbit base) isn't just cool, it would facilitate building ships in space that don't have to escape the gravity well. That and asteroid mining (to get materials for ship building) would be such a huge step to having a real presence off-planet.

    Mine materials on asteroids, send them to the moon refinery and manufacturing facility, send parts up to lunar orbital ship building facility, send ships to Europa, Ganymede, etc.

  • In a practical sense, identifying as lesbian makes it clear who they are interested in. Who they are should already be understood.

    Honestly, non-binary hetero would be considerably more confusing. I at least know with a non-binary lesbian that they like women.

  • I haven't seen anything related to Biden, but I haven't heard a single person, on any side if any aisle, defending Clinton. It's always just seemed like a failed "gotcha" attempt on the right, because most everyone to the left of "I'll vote for anything with an R next to their name" would have no issue throwing offenders from their own side in jail along with the others.
