Futility is resistant

  • Self hosting doesn’t make you immune, though. See how Plex evolved, for example. Self hosting plus free software that isn’t abandoned or compromised is the way, but idealistic developers need to take bread to the table too.

So the way maybe is self-hosted + libre software + a non-profit supporting the project. And that can too be corrupted, for example, the Mozilla Foundation and Google’s influence.

    Always be ready to migrate.

  • This month in Plasma would still be great.

  • I’ve used Libre 1 for years, they work reliably. They will usually fail in the first hours of use, but otherwise work well for the 14 days.

Always keep a standard glucometer at hand, because these monitors can be affected by temperature and humidity.

  • But the ribberts are in addition to those!

  • Yet they never explicitly state you’re allowed to make convenient assumptions. If the bulb was out of hand’s reach the problem would be unsolvable.

Assuming the electrician that wired the switches is in the room would be even a more out-of-the-box solution.

  • The biggest flaw is that it assumes you’ll add conditions you’re not explicitly told are allowed. Many, many problems in school would be trivial if changing the terms beyond what’s stated was allowed.

  • Hobbies are certainly gender-biased. I haven’t met a female iron scrap sculptor in my life, ever. Conversely, I have known several (five IIRC) female painters, but only one male painter.

Disclaimer: I mean real life meeting, social networks or YouTube don’t count. YMMV.

  • D-did I say MAGA? Oh my goodness, I meant MEGA! Anyway, carry on.

  • I belived in you!

  • What’s wrong with being selfish? I didn’t want kids, full-time kids are annoying and a huge responsibility. If someone doesn’t desire children, it’s very much ok to dedicate the energy and resources of raising several kids to themselves.

People are selfish, reproducing doesn’t exempt you from being selfish, people can have kids for selfish reasons too.

I admit sometimes I’ve thought it would have been cool to raise a human from zero, trying to make them a good person, and be a demigod to them on their first years because they didn’t know better; but I still think the world needs less people, not more. Since the 70s we were warned about overpopulation and the environment, and we just added another 4 billion people anyway.

Edit: thank you for the correction, kind stranger.

  • Heck no. Last time I tried to make an account, someone had to invite you, or you had to prove yourself to them by showing your GitHub as if it was your CV.

Lurking is free, so I went to check what these pro hackers were posting and commenting: many links were already in HN, and the quality of comments was similar. No loss there.

  • Any alternative you could suggest? I migrated to HN from SlashDot many years ago, because the discussion was mature, and shitposting/jokes were frowned upon.

To this day I haven’t found something similar.

  • I always wanted to grow a beard, and the confinement was the ideal situation to see if it suited me. Never shaved since then, and I think I never will. Beards are great.

  • Whatever your place defines as a standard. I’ve seen ugly code in C, JavaScript, Java, etc., that uses them all over the place because they’re not mandatory.

If you don’t have consistent indenting, your code looks like copy/paste from several sources; but if you do have consistent indenting, then the indenting of Python is a non-issue.

  • This whole genre of comics is so cringe, they’re basically moral outrage click bait with cartoons.

    They have this in common:

    • Low-effort drawing (at least this one is not that bad)
    • Forced scenarios to put characters at the polar opposite of the moral spectrum.
    • Trying so hard to generate indignation.

I don’t mean that the problem isn’t real, but this is a circlejerk with too many cartoonists already. In a few years we’ll be embarrassed of having participated in this trend of imaginary situations while doing nothing IRL.

  • It would have to be someone who knows him, or something about his style, accessories, or behavior, that emboldened a stranger to assume he was gay. The comic gives no hint at any of this being evident.

Or maybe that guy calls everyone a faggot because he’s always confrontational.
