I got 7 no answer, left 1 Ring Camera message, 1 polite declination, and 1 prison guard who "doesn't really watch the news". I felt awkward as hell but I remain excited about talking to enough people to find 1 or 2 who are like "You think this is all insanity too?!" This isn't the "topic" OP solicited but as an introvert it feels valuable to share here that I felt good after forcing myself to break that ice.
I am easily spun up talking about myself. Getting me talking isn't too hard, but I start to feel introvert exhaustion once I think maybe I'm talking too much or I find reason to doubt the person wants to talk any further.
Movies/shows have been good topics for me. Enough people have seen Spaceballs, Interstellar, The Pitt, Marvel that people's inner nerd pops out like a Jack in the Box when their fandom comes up. A coworker and I once had nothing in common, but I brought up Mystery Science Theater 3000 offhand and she cut me off to shout "I LOVE EMMESSTEE THREE KAY!!"
Asking his 12 year old, over the protests of his wife, whether said 12 year old prefers girls with big boobs or small boobs. And pressing the issue for ten minutes after the 12 year old told him that that was an offensive and disgusting question to hear from this particular pervert and demonstrated child groomer.
This sounds like you encountered an actual road troll, but it could've been one of those things akin to 2 people trying to speak at the same time, where it takes 2+ attempts before they figure out who'll talk and who'll listen.
The matching of your speed during your pass attempt seems like the primary offense.
The only justification I can concoct is if your passing attempt made the driver realize they were going slow enough to make people wanna pass, and they chose a stupid and inconsiderate time to accelerate. But that possibility is undermined by their subsequent braking. Maybe the braking could've been reflexive as they watched you and oncoming traffic approach bumpers, but that's a second unlikely thing that'd have to be true to shed a troll label.
I knew a guy who was that kind of troll. Riding in the car with him, he'd mutter "don't pass me" and would go faster purely to avoid being passed. So I know those trolls exist.
You say it was 5-10 seconds before oncoming traffic would arrive. That feels close to me. 5 seconds is too close to be passing in my opinion. 10 seconds sounds safe.
Having not been there myself, I'm can't feel certain either way. But kudos to you for considering that you might be wrong. Just that fact portrays you as attempting to do right, and lends credibility to the trolliness of the other driver.
