I think he (on a subconscious level) knows this would basically sign his death warrant if he officially did it cold turkey like you say would show it was real. That's probably why he did it like this: to ease his way into doing it.

To use a relevant metaphor: raping children right away doesn’t work. They're dry and scared. You gotta lube up first. This was him opening the lube bottle.

Yes its galling today, but ultimately its a setback that time will cause to fade. Ancient Egyptians and Romans were paramount record keepers who ruled to ancient world, and they were rife with horrendous crimes too. But, their stuff ultimately faded. Ours will too. Frankly, humans and its civilizations don't matter that much. The Universe will keep expanding long after we're gone.

Its worth mentioning that, in fact, the Romans and Egyptians actually reinforce my point: they were abysmal for the stuff you're on about. But, human civilization evoles. Where slavery was tolerated by the most powerful civilizations for thousands of years, today's powerful civilizations have outlawed slavery in their jurisdictions pretty quickly (only took the USA like 70-ish years). On a long enough timeline, the overall arc of history has bent towards liberty. For someone who "took a history class in college", you should be aware of that.

I'd gladly do so if you add an expressed permission in the rules to guaruntee that some other mod in the future doesn't bjtch about making that sort of change (especially if this happens again to another article down the road). Add text to rule 1. Like add a rule 1a that says something like:

The original poster may update their Lemmy post's titles to match an updated article title ONLY IF the origional source has updated the article's title subsequent to the original posting on Lemmy.

Make that change, and I'll happily update it. I just want to shield myself and future posters from arbitrary and capricious moderators.

Be a good person and do the right thing, but don’t believe in the mythology of America spreading liberty or democracy.

Not to be a nitpicker, but its "hanged" not "hung". Hung is the past tense of hanging something up (Jimmy went and hung up his coat). The past tense of the execution is hanged (Jimmy was hanged at dawn in town square).

He cannot claim he didn’t and his inability to produce them may result in a default judgement.

A default judgment is a step beyond what happens. A default judgment relates to a complete failure to engage in the process in any way (like failings to enter an appearance, failing to prescribe to the time periods for filing responsive pleadings, etc.) What a failure to produce because the document(s) (intentionally or negligently) no longer exist would be to create an adverse inference/presumption. This could lead to special jurry instructions, if it was material to the case, that weight against the bad actor.
