  • Not even 100 subscribers.But I was referring to the Fediverse in general. It won't ever scale to a real global default social network, on the donations and the kindness of strangers.

    If we don't pay for it, then it'll be paid for by adds.Then we're back to what we're trying to get away from.Communick or whatever, just pay. Even if it's a donation.

  • I played with it. Had no problems. Worked fine.Then realised it doesn't do much for me personally. But it seems cool.

  • It's not free. Servers and bandwidth cost money.If you're not paying, someone is being generous and paying for you.

    No I don't work there. But I have been paying for 2 years. And it's the only way for the Fediverse to scale. Donations won't get us to 100M users and beyond.

  • I'm happy with Communick. They offer Lemmy, Mastodon, Matrix, and Funkwhale for one subscription. Its worth paying for, because the Fediverse isn't free.

    By their definition I love having and keeping a job. That doesn't sound right to me.

  • Barter, gift economy, whatever you call the direct trade of goods, is the alternative to money. And it only works in small local groups, where everyone knows who to trust and who not to.

    Money looong predated capitalism. Every society that grew beyond a few hundred people eventually starts using some form of money. Acient Mesopotamia had actual accountants who tracked money and goods more than 5000 years ago.

  • This is definitely mostly true.It does breakdown some when every new deck has the same starting order, and people frequently shuffle poorly. Those 52! possibilities shrink massively.

  • I've been trying to leave Adobe for over a decade. As bad as their management is, their engineers are very good. Nobody is even half way to replacing Photoshop or Lightroom.

  • It comes down to two fundamental conceptions of what the Fediverse should be.

    One is a single account, all access, everything does anything any other thing does, kind of vision.

    The other is a, we do our thing, you do yours, we can do together where appropriate, kind of vision.

    I fall into the later. I have no problem with multiple accounts for different kinds of content and entertainment. You may fall closer to the former.

  • As the article explains, that's not an argument for abolition, but regulation instead. You're also not thinking through how this could or would work. You're just kind of assuming the current black market would now be legal. But that doesn't make sense.
