  • Centre right = "liberal" in American parlance, supporter of the Democratic party.

They are not Nazis (I am assuming you referring to my other friend, not the centre-right one). I am not white. If they were Nazis we wouldn't be friends for almost 20 years. They'll come about (and they don't fully support Trump and have reservations), they are good people.

    Cool story bro

Thank you for this. You are literally proving my point. I couldn't have done a better job myself.

Keep up with the "Cool story bro", this is the exact nihilist attitude that I was talking about. US is rife with these sort of nihilists and performative roleplayers. Cyberflunk does not know me (I have far more to lose with Trump than Cryberflunk), does not know my friends and yet the only thing that he took from post is that I have "Nazi" friends (while being not white).

This is why the following recommendation is harsh, but true:

Not to be a doomer, but by recommendation would be to either forget about politics (enjoy the relatively high material standard of living in the US, the marvel movies, the fast food and so on) or leave the country, move to Canada (or even Mexico) or Europe.

  • No disrespect, but from my time living in the US (and I still have very good friends on both sides of the political spectrum) it is extremely unlikely Americans will be able to do anything about the current oligarch regime.

Do you honestly think Americans are capable of not just bullshit protest, but actually taking major urban areas (particularly of significant symbolic value) and fighting back against attempts to put down the protest. And I am not just talking out of my ass, I was at those protest both during the daytime and during the night building out barricades.

I will note that when I use the term "bullshit protest", I am not necessarily saying protest won't work. But you would need 60-70 million Americans protest almost daily and shutting the country down. Let's be real, this is not happening in the US.

Paradoxically, talking to my centre-right American friend is what led me to the conclusion that the current US system is basically at a dead end. They mentioned the "gilded age" and how the US managed to "make it through". History is unpredictable and institutions save you, until they don't.

Not to be a doomer, but my recommendation would be to either forget about politics (enjoy the relatively high material standard of living in the US, the marvel movies, the fast food and so on) or leave the country, move to Canada (or even Mexico) or Europe.

EDIT: In retrospective, the post and the last paragraph was honestly too negative and lacking in compassion. What I really should have said is that now is not the time to think of exceptionalism, the time is to make it happen.

  • US is truly turning into an oligarch run mafia state dominated by chauvinists, fake-christians, nihilists and criminals. There is a large amount of sane Americans too (I've lived in the US for many years and have travelled extensively), but they are too well off and risk averse to take any actions to protect their freedoms and American society.

I'll just quote another post I made on this topic:

While I genuinely hope this will serve as a wake up call (not in the seemingly fake and preformative way done by the California governor) for the locals, from my time living there I have my doubts, it seems that Americans are a bit too well off and risk averse to take action.

Perhaps it may make sense to share a vignette from an Asian country I was travelling in.

We took the train from a regional capital to a smaller city. A week later, we were on our way back to the regional capital to catch a plane.

We go to the railway station and find out that Maoist rebels bombed the railway. So we we find a driver with an off-road vehicle to travel through the jungle road (it was in a terrible state, don’t think a regular car would have managed) to the regional capital.

On the way through the jungle we approach a group of burned out trucks with the military surrounding them. We ask them what happened. The military said the Maoist rebels stopped the trucks, let the drivers go (I believe they were actually treated well and the military said they were dropped off at the nearest village completely unharmed and with their belongings). The truck drivers were merely employees and get shit pay with significant dangers (trucks are often heavily overloaded, you constantly see them crash because of this).

So you might say, well what does this have to do with the US? While I don’t support Maoists (even though they likely had good reasons as that region was particularly corrupt and did not benefit from broader national economic growth), one has to admit that they definitely are not risk averse and are willing and able to go through.

To cite another (fictional) example, it’s like that scene in The Godfather 2 where Michael Corleone sees the commitment of the Cuban rebels and realizes that the Batista regime is not going to hold after he sees the Cuban rebel blow himself up to take out the goon leader, rather than face arrest (and likely torture and death).

America is not that kind of place (for better or worse).

EDIT: I will also add that I really hope that I am completely wrong. Without context the post is overly negative. There is a chance for things to change; none of us (including me) can predict whether it will happen or not. That being said, I think we can all agree that it's not going to be easy and will require novel approaches outside of the standard processes that drive American political culture.

  • Kirk was a vile, bigoted reactionary. Communists stand against everything he stood for.

Citation needed (not about the Kirk fellow, although an argument can be made that he was a demagogue and believed in nothing).

  • withholding of empathy

Do you think there are any situations where it is reasonable to withhold empathy?

From my understanding the Kirk fellow was a demagogue who was happy to promote all sorts of vile ideas for personal enrichment.

From my time in the US, I understand that this sort of thinking is haram, but I have enough knowledge of comparable demagogues in other countries to not buy into the "sincere belief" gibberish.

  • American politics has sides. There is no use pretending it doesn’t. But both sides are meant to be on the same side of a larger project — we are all, or most of us, anyway, trying to maintain the viability of the American experiment. We can live with losing an election because we believe in the promise of the next election; we can live with losing an argument because we believe that there will be another argument. Political violence imperils that.

And if there is no next election? Keep in mind that both russia and Turkmenistan formally do have elections and the russians even have fake communist parties.

Mind you I am not saying what one should or shouldn't do. That's up to every individual. But to assume that the US is immune to basic human dynamics is the height of arrogance.

  • I generally oppose capital punishment, with possible exceptions for high treason (in times of war) or enabling mass deaths for personal benefits (no playing dumb).

My point is that full asset seizure and real multi-decade challenging community service work is a much better long term option.

  • It sounds like he is afraid for his own life.

I don't support random killing of oligarchs.

You want an independent court to evaluate their crimes on principles of justice (so not an American court) and if their guilt is proven give them an option of 20 years live-in community service doing de-mining work or 40 years in prison. This is with full asset seizure (every last cent) and a requirement that all family members and business partners sign an affidavit stating that if they collaborated with hiding assets or anything else they get to do 20 years live-in community service (e.g. junior janitor at a refugee camp in Bangladesh) or 40 years prison.

That being said, the world has its own reality outside of American expectations and polemics. One can read history to see how things do actually work out.

  • For me personally, I don't think Trump is the real issue, he is a mere symptom. The cause lies in American society (not all of it or course). And when I say American society, I don't necessarily mean exclusively Trump supporters.

The shallow polemics about freedom of this and that (used as a signalling device to show how "good" and "independent" one is), broad acceptance of corruption, criminality, oligarchy (especially when marketed in context of freedom and independence etc.), lack of desire to be informed about things outside of the hustle/money and pop culture.

But the real issue that makes the above points so toxic in context of the US (you can of course find these issues anywhere) is that most Americans are simply too well off (on a relative basis) and risk averse to support true reform and powerful anti-crime policies.

And as the US is a defacto two party system, it makes it impossible for any meaningful political movement that opposes criminality and corruption to take hold.

That's the impression I got from living there for several and visiting somewhat regularly at one point.

  • Will Tim Apple be a special guest on the "Ow, my balls!!" premier on the Trump channel?

  • I am just curious, do you consider the reverse to be a realistic possibility?

The US formally becoming a chauvinistic, fake-Christian, oligarch/mafia state, with no real democracy (the Russians nominally do have elections) for the next 30-50 years.

The only reason I ask is that my centre-right friends from the US have mentioned things like "Well, we had the gilded age, and we made it through."

While the above is true, there are also other key historical events to consider like the great depression, global rise of fascism and WW2.

  • What the fuck is this?

On one hand I feel like say something along the lines of "we live in the worst of timelines", but on the other hand it's really not that strange. The aesthetics and communication methods (smaller world and all that) have changed, but in the broader historical sense it's not too unique.

  • As someone who followed the russian "opposition" relatively closely, the similarity with the current US opposition (perhaps not all of them) is striking.

The russian opposition wanted to have their cake and eat it too. Allegedly opposing putin, but still supporting russian imperialism (supporting the annexation of Crimea). Why would the average russian choose them over the real deal?

They were simply unwilling to deal with reality and admit that at this point the only options remaining is violent resistance. there will never be a Disney style outcome in russia where magically it will become democratic and the opposition will win.

US opposition is also unwilling to tell their constituents that if they are truly opposed to the current oligarchic regime, they will have to make sacrifices. It's just how the world works, nothing comes easy.

  • Of course, I just don't buy that the CA author cares beyond aesethics.

    It just grifting.

  • Nah, not whataboutism.

A pro-russia tankie cannot be trusted in principle.

  • A tankie roach came out of the sewer.

Mass summary execution of civilians, kill lists of cultural and political leaders, stealing hundreds of thousands of children, banning of language and culture (and keeping tens of thousands of civilians in torture camps) is all genocide.

This is the kind of stuff that makes me not believe that western "leftist" claims of concern about Gaza are genuine.

You are all a bunch fucking posers and scumbags.

  • Keep playing dumb.

With this attitude, western "leftists" are going to keep losing.

  • The follow who wrote this article is a hypocrite, he refuses to recognize what the russians are doing in Ukraine is genocide.

Not to mention he has the gall to talk about NATO and russian policy without even speaking russian or having lived in eastern europe.

    Typical western "leftist".

    Current Affairs is trash.

  • While I don't trust Trump in the least, only the ignorant would think it's possible to negotiate with the russians without threats of violence.

Only people who don't speak russian, don't know history and are too lazy to evaluate sociological research of modern russia would come up with such gibberish.
