  • I realize this is a joke, but the obvious soundtrack for this article is "Descending Angels of Total Annihilation" by Xiphoid Dementia. It's about the same topic, and it doesn't have enough lyrics to be distracting but it has garbled words that sound kinda like slop. (but it isn't - it's a dude.)

  • I don't mean any disrespect, you're right, food/housing insecurity is a systemic problem even though it doesn't need to be and high-quality individual decisionmaking doesn't provide any guarantees.

    If I'm being flippant it's a reaction to those who say families (especially large families) are a joy and blessing and everybody needs to own a house. That might be true in some cases but for others of us that was never something we could count on so we had to adjust. No disrespect to anyone though, truly we all deserve better.

  • If you do evil, then you are part of the problem. That only changes once you stop.

    I think we fundamentally agree, and are now just debating tactics. Personally I've found that telling someone they're evil makes it easy for them to dismiss my opinion completely.

  • I've found it's better to focus on people's actions, rather than the people themselves. i.e. if I tell someone they as a person are a problem, that's very hard for them to change. If I tell them their action is a problem, that's a lot easier.

    ofc it may still be tough to change their action, but at least it makes them consider why they are commiting that action, and it may even lead to the realization that (often) the problem is systemic.

  • Yeah I was gonna say this. Even just focusing on Lemmy/Piefed, when I'm on the phone I'm just scrolling, maybe sometimes making a short comment. When I'm on the PC I'm editing images to post, or typing longer comments.

    So you could do it in public without the apparatus, if you had the specially designed shoes and placed the hooks ahead of time. (and had good core strength)

  • I don't really like manga, but one of the best stories I've ever read in any format is the 7-volume Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. It's post-apocalyptic fantasy about the nature of evil, the corruption of humanity, the extent to which individuals can fight against historical forces, and the fragility of civilization, for a start. Plus there's a lot of action and world-building. There's an anime movie which covers about one tenth of the story, if you want to get a feel for it.

  • Last couple times this happened I called a plumber I trusted. The first time they used a "snake", the second time they used a sink plunger. At the time I had a bit of money and could afford it, and I didn't want to break a pipe or put the wrong chemical down there or something.
