They need a tech ethics board, and people need a license to operate or work in decision-making capacities. Also, anyone above the person's head making an unethical decision loses their license, too. License should be cheap to prevent monopoly, but you have to have one to handle data. Don't have a license. Don't have a company. Plant shitty surveillance without separate, noticeable, succinctly presented agreements that are clear and understandable, with warnings about currently misunderstood uses, then you lose license. First offense.
Edit: Also mandatory audits with preformulated and separate, and succint notifications are applied. "This company sells your info to the government and police forces. Any private information, even sexual in nature, can be used against you. Your information will be used by several companies to build your complete psychological profile to sell you things you wouldn't normally purchase and predict crimes you might commit."
I've been trying to tell people for 15 years. It hasn't worked a single bit. It's frustrating that people think they have nothing to hide when their carelessness and lack of tech knowledge is ruining the future of the next generations. I just can't try to explain it to everyone. They don't link the relation at all. I thought maybe eventually, they would just get it, but here we still are...
They had plenty of time to discover the reasons for opposing views and alternate media sources to see things from the other side. However, you're partially right, at least, that I should have more empathy. I will try to remember it and make an attempt moving forward. At this point, their decisions have made my everyday life a nightmare, so it will be tough, but I guess I should still try.
The trick is figuring out what parties do that without constantly sniffing traffic or reading source code. Sometimes I wonder what all on F Droid has malware.
You must be really likeable. People downvoted the shit out of me on Reddit. I always hoped people didn't hate what I said enough to downvote that much in real life.
Trump's election is what did it for me. That and Reddit's user experience had become so watered down with slop and bad content presentation in general. I've unsubscribed from Amazon, no Paypal, deleted Facebook, stopped using Gmail mostly (still working on that), deleted Instagram, stopped watching CNN, stopped allowing tracking and fingerprinting as much as possible. If your site tracks, I'm using another unless it is reasonable for the application.
Since then, on my phone, I use FOSS browser, NextDNS, Eternity for Lemmy, Pixelfed and Mastodon. For all my searching, I started using Swisscows, but now I am searching with SearxNG. Also, I am trying Proton, Tutanota, and kollabnow for email. Got Arch Linux on laptop because Microsoft tracking and snooping is so far out of control it should be illegal 50 different ways.
This is a failure to recognize an enemy. They are not "just making mistakes." These people are ruining lives, advocating for torture, removing civil rights, being racists and removing employment protections from women and minorities, and they just started a war with a nuclear power for no reason, in a way I'm pretty sure is illegal. Do they just need to go stab your mother to death? Wtf will it take you people to wake the fuck up?
Billions of dollars, and they can't afford to buy ebooks?
