    It‘s totally fine for Lemmy instances to restrict speech in whatever way they like. That’s kind of the point of the fediverse.

    The more restrictions an instance has, the less free speech it allows.

    The right to free speech is about the government restricting speech. Human groups like Lemmy instances and communities always restrict speech in one way or another, as in manners, what topics and opinions are deemed appropriate, etc. That‘s by necessity.

    There’s also a constant push and pull going on about what’s considered acceptable and not acceptable speech in every group. The political overtone window is an example of that.

    Let’s be specific to db0 in this context. Defederating feddit.org isn’t about regulating speech on db0, it’s a political power move. It‘s trying to influence speech regulation on feddit.org itself and indiscriminately bans feddit.org users from db0, regardless of what they have ever said. This is an attempt to discredit speech, that’s considered main stream in Germany. It also affects users from Germany the most, again indiscriminately.

    Feddit.org didn’t demand any restriction on speech on other servers on the other hand. They simply have rules db0 doesn’t like.

    So this move by db0 is directly aimed against free speech of others, and their ability to regulate speech as they deem appropriate. So characterizing db0 as pro free speech is not a good fit.

    To db0‘s credit, their community !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com where people can complain about moderation policies around the fediverse is pro free speech. It highlights arbitrary application of rules, abuse of mod power, makes unwritten rules visible. It’s great that it exists. Certainly one of the best communities on the fediverse.

    In a real world electricity grid, there are always some fluctuations, load balancing, and also redundant generators, that turn on on demand.

    You also can’t just turn most types of powerplants on and off easily or quickly.

    Demand for electricity also isn’t constant. Some industries will select the time they use the most electricity according to price and supply.

    Prime example: water pumped storage. When there’s superfluous electricity it pumps water uphill, if there’s more demand, it generates electricity.

    So when the price is very high, the demand will drop, except the inelastic demand. So if this guy pushes up the price and demand falls, he might not make more money overall.

    You can easily observe this in the real world as well. If things get too expensive, people change what they buy. Chocolates with Easter design was really expensive this year in Germany, demand fell immensely. The supermarkets are still full with it a huge discounts.

    However you should have also talked about how price is set in monopolies, duopolies, oligopolies, and barriers to enter a market.

    Of course economists know things are more complicated than is taught in an introductory course.

  • The main disadvantage octopi have is their antisocial behavior. The parents don’t raise and teach their young. They live in solitude. The only time they spent time together is for mating, after which they die.

    Octopuses that can talk to each other, hunt in groups, and raise their young collectively would be pretty formidable. Even if they managed to get there, they would still be living underwater making the use of fire pretty difficult.

    Children of Ruin is a great book that describes a civilization of octopus, if you want to explore this a bit.
