  • Hmm. I have a 12 channel peristaltic pump at the moment that is meant for watering plants. Meaning they have a lot of downtime so the tubes are compressed for quite some time at the same spot.

    Ignore the yellow rollers in the image below, that was experimental. The final version has 3 all metal rollers so the tube is always compressed at one point. Over the tubes are U shaped bracket is mounted for compression.

    It's an entirely custom design from scratch and haven't uploaded the model to a 3D printing website yet but plan on doing so.

  • Hmm.. I use cheapass silicone tubing, 5mm ID 7mm OD and wear hasn't been an issue. Perhaps you compress the tube too much. The tube should be held shut so that no liquid flows backwards but also not compressed so much that it wears the tubing out. Your pump should have a variable tensioner on it.

    Perhaps also you don't have enough rollers. At least one roller needs to be in full contact with the tubing (compressing) so that there is no backflow.

  • I have experience with peristaltic pumps. What issues do you mean?

  • I would not bet on 3D printing alone. Perhaps consider CNC engraving or lasercutting to go with it. The techniques are all very similar and you can appeal to a wider customer base.

    Perhaps with 3D printing it's worth making lithophanes for people and an engraver to make a nice frame out of wood. I'm considering doing this.

  • I haven't seriously posted anything on reddit since the APIcalypse but still lurk there occasionally.

    It's also still a decent source of tech information and user experience but that will soon be over as well.

    These days reddit is filled with AI slop, malicious bots, Russian trolls, nazi propaganda etc. Outside of some niche subreddits that site is not worth interacting with anymore than necessary.

  • What setup did you use? I'm interested in doing this as well. I've already self hosted a NAS with vpn access using an RPI4 with PiVPN. It works quite well.

  • Overhangs are always difficult in 3D printing and your part cooling fan makes a huge difference in this. Also your print speed and temperature are factors.

    This model however can also be printed sideways, you'll have lower bed adhesion but it won't have any overhangs this way.

  • I hope aliexpress is better. I buy a lot of stuff from there like electronics components which aren't really sold locally anymore. Also tools and arduino related things...

  • Ackschually, you don't need to print them entirely sideways for structural integrity. Printing at an angle should also work and you don't get so many artifacts from support material.

  • Nice to hear! At the moment the spindle, if it has the right to be called that, is a 775 motor with a chuck attached to it. Which is good enough for circuit boards and wood. Perhaps aluminium is doable as well as long as the feed rate is kept slow enough.

    Should milling steel ever be on the table I'll make a larger machine and will use leadscrews on X and Y instead of belts and perhaps dual Z motors.

    I've also designed the build around materials that were readily available such as the 18mm X rails. Apparently they're quite obscure since they aren't sold on typical Chinese webshops.

  • Thanks! Indeed the Z axis rests on only one MGN9H block. For stability it can be changed to two sliders per rail. For circuit boards and wood it should be strong enough to handle the load.

    As for github/launchpad, I never used those before for sharing anything. I will look into those.
