  • Recent ones I've been trying on Linux:

    By far, I'm enjoying Trilium over the others. Trilium can do LaTeX, while Flatnotes and MarkItUp can't (don't remember if Logseq can). That coupled with What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) note taking - the kind of text editing like Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, or Google Docs - makes thing work just like OneNote. Plus, one of the things I was really looking forward to seeing in a Personal Knowledge Management System (PKMS) was a graphical/node map view of all my notes, which again Trilium does.

    I'm actually considering making one of my old laptops a perma-server that I can run Trilium on so I can access it on both my new laptop, my phone, or pretty much any other device with an Internet connection.

    Last thing I'll say is that it doesn't hurt to try everything and see what sticks!!! Before settling down on something permanent that works for you, that is.

  • You can plug anything back into your how power system so long as the reverse current is not more than the ratings of the wires & equipment that current runs through.

    In the US, most residential outlets are rated for 15-20 Amps at 120 Volts. You'd need to find a solar panel that matches these ratings. There are what's called "AC solar panels" or just panels with micro inverters that transform the DC electricity from the panel to AC right on the panel itself. As long as the circuit you plug into is rated for it, you can plug as many panels like this into your home power system.

    I'd have to check the National Electrical Code (NEC), but I believe that if you're planning on making those solar panels permanent, and since the hypothetical ones in this conversation have "plug and cord" connections, you'd need to hardwire those panels with wiring hidden behind drywall. If you truly plan to use those panels temporarily, such as seasonally, maybe you can make the argument that you don't need to do that.

    It's all up to your Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), which is usually your town's or city's Building or Electrical Department.

    My dad's a beekeeper, and I've had the (dis)pleasure of helping him with his post-retirement hobby.

    He extracts honey after every nectar flow throughout the year. Usually there's 3-6 of those, depending on how much it's rained.

    Every single winter, he has to feed the bees sugar water and sugar bricks instead of giving them the honey they worked hard to create in the preceding seasons so they don't die. This practice was the moment I considered beekeeping unethical because he's robbing the bees of their agency, and controlling their diet. Controlling animals and their behaviors by stealing from them isn't ethical. It's placing bees in a permanent subservient state as they keep making more and more and more honey, when in the wild they'd only make as much as they need.

    Couple that with how my dad also sets up swarm traps such that when the bees leave and take off from their old hive because it was unsuitable, they're often re-captured and sent right back to the slave camp.

    And let's not kid ourselves about the quality of beehives. Biological threats like the parasitic varroa mite, hive beetles, ants, moths, and an assortment of other bugs are always on the attack to steal honey. If not caught in time with things like detergent, diatomaceous earth, or gas fumigation, this can destroy an entire box of honey, let alone the hive itself. My dad has to constantly be on the lookout for these threats, and use chemicals that often also impact the bees themselves. So he's sacrificing some of the hive to save the rest of it. The "high quality accomodation" is a facade.

    Then you have to speak about the numerous impacts honeybees have to the surrounding environment, like spreading viruses, hogging resources over other pollinators, fighting other bees, etc. That's not ethical either, as much as we like to use honeybees to pollinate our own domesticated foods.

    Animals of every kind deserve agency, autonomy, control over their behaviors and resources, free movement, and the right to protect themselves. Hobbyist and industrial beekeeping rejects all of this.

    It's unnecessary because you can get all of your nutrition through plant-based sources. And if that's not enough, there are plant-based meat alternatives as well as lab grown meat on the horizon.

    You don't have a need to eat meat because you have options to eat other things that cause less to no suffering.

  • At that point we don't need to farm animals.

    Best thing to do at that point would be to outlaw breeding of new farm animals, send the remaining ones to sanctuaries, and let them live the rest of their lives out on their own terms. Might need to sterilize as well.

    All of this would aim to restore natural populations of cows, pigs, chickens, goats, sheep, etc. in the world to native levels. And if those animals aren't native, then imo there is no reason to help sustain them. Release to the wild at some point and let nature take it's course. Of course, this also means restoring natural predators to ecosystems like wolves, which would help keep populations in check.

    Those species that are native, however, but are declining and on the brink of extinction: those we should focus on for conservation and regeneration.

    It's a tough balance, but it can be done ethically

  • The US could feed its own population multiple times over if we used something like 30% of our current agricultural farmland subject to growing animal feed instead for growing things like corn, soybean, and wheat, as well as vegetables and fruit.

    We'd still need to import some stuff, but we could cover the vast majority of Americans' nutrition doing this WHILE at the same time re-wilding the country and helping restore biodiversity.

    Hope to see this shift in my lifetime

    Corporations in the US are seeing the highest profits they've ever seen in history. Wage theft has never been worse. Income disparity is widening more and more every year without any prospect of redistribution in sight.

    Corporations in China, however, are folded into the state as soon as they get too large. Corporate profits are collected by the state and redistributed to the population. China has many more protections to prevent it from choosing greed and sacrificing the working people than the US.

    I want what's happening in China to happen to us in America.
