    I will assume you are asking genuinely, but I hope you realize that every step that has prepared people to strike has been disparaged by people saying "not enough!"

    I don't think such a strong yet peaceful resistance to ICE could have happened without the series of No Kings protests.

    I don't think that the statewide strike could have happened without the persistent yet peaceful protest and resistance.

    I don't think the national one day strike could happen tomorrow without some evidence of it being successful and effective at the state-level, which it was.

    An ongoing strike will be more likely to be successful if it follows a series of one day strikes. Yet a certain contingent cries "forever national strike now", as if that can manifest itself just by saying it. So I'm sorry if you're taking heat for a genuine concern, but it follows a long line of other users questioning if any action is "enough".

    In the realm of strike action, it's like rotating strikes for an industry or work-to-rule instead of going directly to an all out work stoppage. These are tools you need to take time and prepare to use, and use them effectively. America's not used to resisting the federal apparatus en masse like this in decades. Allow people some time and training. And I don't imagine tomorrow will be the last day people decide to take action to resist the Trump admin.

  • IMO they're both good and deserve our weight, I do think they can work off each other.

    I use Lemmy because their mobile app support is much better and Jerboa (the Lemmy maintainers' app) has everything I need and not a single bit more. I think it would be great for Piefed to get more app support.

    There are a lot of features that I think Lemmy can benefit from emulating from Piefed, like the option to show comments from crossposted threads, filters, and more granular moderation capability. I heard Piefed is a lot lighter on resources, so if I were to self-host I might use that one. Also I have no idea how many of Lemmy's shortcomings are due to be addressed in their planned 1.0 release.

    Lemmy development is slow whereas Piefed is a bit faster, I think each is great in their own right. Not everyone agrees with me here, but I think the Lemmy developers do a good job keeping their personal beliefs to their own instance, rather than let it infiltrate the code base. Same with Piefed. I think the development of both should be encouraged rather than trying to find rifts and making it a team sport.

  • This lowers the bar of entry to acclimatize people to a future indefinite strike. Is one day of action going to be enough? Most people know, probably not, but if for whatever reason it is, great! Otherwise of course people will be at it longer and with better preparation.

    There are examples of strikes that come about too quickly that don’t bring about change. All my examples here are Canadian because solidarity strikes are banned in the US due to Taft Hartley and rugged individualism has made Americans not really test it en masse.

    One day strikes have made big impacts in the past as well, like in BC in the 1980s.

    One of the biggest and most successful strikes in Canada, yet very rarely talked about appears to me as the Québec 1972 strike. It followed many years of unrest including the October Crisis of 1970, where the Prime Minister put down separatist militias. It didn't just randomly happen, it took months of planning and preparation, long exposure to a repressing force, and a populace with a mind and purpose for collective action.

    The point being, complaints like this come across to me as shallow and unthoughtful. Each of these actions are a step towards a stronger, more robust resistance that with each additional participant become more difficult for any fascist administration put down. They keep doubling down but they are failing miserably to achieve their aims, which was ostensibly to subjugate and silence the people of Minnesota. I ask you to nurture and encourage people showing solidarity instead of writing it off as insufficient.

    Have you found ways to reconnect with technology?

    My rule is that I interact with technology on my own terms and volition. I get upset if I get led or 'tricked' into an app or consuming some form of media. I access tech when I want to and am looking for something, and try to reject the idea that content should come to me in a steady stream. If I am watching brainrot it will be because I want to click and scroll through brainrot videos, not because it was the next one to play after the video I actually wanted to watch.

    If you want bliss at this endless beach, build your own little FOSS sandcastle. If it washes away, build it somewhere else, and find other people that like to build FOSS sandcastles.

    I get it, even with link posts and memes sometimes I'm not sure if I'm posting it in the right places, or if I have to trade off potential traction with how closely related it is.

    A solution I've employed sometimes is to post to two spots:

    • first in the niche community where it feels a best fit, even if it shows like 12 subscribers...
    • then crosspost to a more popular one for visibility with a link in body text to the other one, to help other people discover the niche community.

    That way you don't feel forced to only participate in the popular instances and communities.

    Also that explains to me how quickly DHS and PPB were able to paint Luis Nino-Moncada as a Tren de Aragua conspirator, as it seems there are hundreds of agents looking for any kind of link to brandish people in federal custody as terrorist criminals.

    Clearly this is realizing people's longstanding fears about the US Patriot Act and then going beyond that. I'd imagine the FBI is concerned that these powers aren't being used "the right way" that there would be public interest in eventually taking those powers away from all government agencies, thanks to DHS' abuse.
