  • TrueNas is pretty top notch and offers a variety of storage and protocol options. If you're at all familiar with Linux style OS, it should be pretty easy to work with. Setting up storage comes with a little bit of a learning curve, but it's not too bad. This SAN/NAS OS is polished, performant, and extensible. If you're not planning on using SMB or Samba, you can most certainly use NFS, or iSCSI if that's your thing.

    Curling ok I was wrong about this one. Seemed pretty laid back but it sounds more intense than I had thought!

    I'd hazard to suggest playing cards or board games, still has the element of challenge/sport, but doesn't require too much exertion.

    Possibly E-Sports if you're into that sort of thing. Let the game console / computer do the running.

  • A lot of our residential infrastructure is underground, because of the weather we have. Though, there's a fair amount of aerial hardware as well. Where I live is famous for ice storms, and every few years there's a major outage that lasts anywhere from 12 to 48 hours. They're rare, but they do occur. More often it's because someone hit a pole or ground mount transformer, versus a falling branch or lightning bolt.

    I still prefer ice, snow, and occasional outages to unbearable heat and humidity, earthquake, and hurricane tradeoff being further south or west.

    To answer OP, there's a visible change in road surface and signage not only at state borders, but even between county and town lines. Each county handles the road a different way, and the finish/quality can differ a LOT even between municipalities and counties.

  • You might be interested in watching the series "The Terror". It's not pirates in any way, but it chronicles the voyages and slow descent into madness of The Terror and The Erebus crews of Franklin's lost polar expedition. It's nautical, dark, has some supernatural elements, and may scratch your itch. I thought it was excellent.

    Edit: there's another supernatural nautical series called 1899. It was created by the same people as DARK (one of my all time top rated series ever). It wasn't anywhere near as good as DARK, but it was an interesting watch. It's rather hard to describe it without giving anything away, but it's set on an oceanliner at sea in 1899, and strange things start happening. It's similar in nature to The Terror so I thought I'd mention it. The Terror is far, far better IMO.

  • I just finished ViewFinder. It's peaceful, surreal, beautiful, and poignant. Highly recommended if you like puzzle games. The end hits you in the feels.

  • There are a number of collectors and enthusiasts who enjoy alternative types of media. It was an experience listening to music on tape and hearing the hiss of the tape. It has a different sound to it, sort of like vinyl.

    If there's money to be made, they'll find ways to get it. If that means selling tapes, they'll sell tapes again. Records are still back in style and being mass produced again.

  • What were your parent's rules on video games?

  • As kids we had a dos 286 pc with some basic vga games. Nearly all of them were educational so my parents let us play those whenever. We got a used SNES for xmas the year the n64 came out, and we played that as much as we could. My parents didn't know then and still struggle now with computers, so they let me do as I pleased with the PC, within reason.

    As a teen I bought my own computer and my own PC games. My parents probably would not have approved of me playing half life, doom, quake, UT, and other graphic games, but I played the hell out of those. I also had stuff like myst that were pretty low key but fun. My PC was my own personal machine, so I did with it what I wanted, when I wanted.

    The usual concern with most older gen gamers was having parents telling us video games would rot our brains. As they stared at the TV for hours most nights... Video games sharpen your motor skills, reflex times, logic and reasoning skills, among other things. I find quite the opposite to be true and would advocate that video games are actually very, very good for you in many ways, unlike most television shows. I highly encourage gaming over watching. Our family game night is usually played on a console rather than a table.

  • It's all about what works best for the particular individual. The majority of people want some hand-holding, and that's ok. Not everyone is into designing their own hotends or completely rebuilding stock printers into monsters :)
