  • Personally I run mine through a cloudflared tunnel. I have to pay for the domain and tunneling but I paid like $15 something for 5 years. Now all you have to do is put in the url and it runs in any browser or jellyfin app immediately. I understand the VPN and all that is the free option, but I'm not tech savy enough to teach others that stuff and this is effectively paying a quarter monthly.

  • Because Wichita is not a busy city and they also tolled the free parking lots they built a decade back. If you want to go to the cultural heart or file a document at the courthouse you better be prepared to walk two miles or pay for parking.

    I get that free parking is a novelty everywhere else, though I compare that to wondering why anyone would want automated tax returns when you can just pay for turbo tax, but Wichita is new to that and of all the options to pad the revenue stream the mayor picked the one that takes it out of the citizens and small businesses.

  • While a lot of people like to point to Hank as a caricature of conservative values, I really feel like that misses the mark. Hank is a great example of someone who doesn't compromise morals for values. A big part of the show revolves around Hank being subject to things that sit far outside his limited world view. Each time he goes through an arch of emotions, initially reacting with the confusion and fear you'd expect from a middle aged white Christian man finding out that his wife's new friend is a prostitute or that his friend's dad is fabulously gay, before having a contemplative moment where he either talks openly with peggy before bed or works on something mechanical. He then ultimately recovers from the situation and while he may still feel uncomfortable with the topic he always resolves to approach it from a place of earnest understanding. He does not let his political, religious, or societal values trump his moral imperative to treat people with the respect they deserve and to help a person in need.

    Watching in its entirety for the first time as an adult, I made the other common mistake in thinking hank was a bad character because despite being conservative coded he frequently makes what I recognized as being incredibly progressive and left leaning decisions. I couldn't decide if it was the writer's secret goal to try an reeducate the bigots of the right by tricking them into relating to a man who can be ok with drag queens. That is the common folly of trying to understand a creature while you stand beside the monster wearing its corpse as a disguise. Conservative doesn't mean what it used to, it doesn't mean anything. None of our political terms do. But King of the Hill came out when they still did mean something and was made by people who lived through time when it actually matched the definition of the word. Conservative used to mean Hank Hill. Conservative used to mean hating the idea of Walmart killing local businesses. It used to mean focusing on your community. It used to mean striving for a simple world, not fighting against anything that expands it. There is a lot that the show can teach us about political discourse but I honestly don't think anyone is ready to really learn it.

  • I want to preface this by saying I'm not here to shit on Catholicism and it's believers. As with many cases, my problem is with people in power.

    While it is true that the Vatican has never been directly involved, the same can be said about the US government and we're currently seeing that the policy isn't as rigid as advertised. The stain on the Vatican is due to inaction. There are enough cases of this happening that the public has associated it with the religion as a whole. One would think that the leader of any organization that finds out one of its members is exploiting their role to abuse someone would have that person stripped of their rank and turned over to the authorities along with anyone that aided the bad actor. Were Dominos to find out a branch of their restaurants were using their pizza deliveries as a means of distributing drugs, they would close the business, fire everyone involved, and turn over any existing evidence to the police.

    Even if the Vatican genuinely didn't know about the scandal until it made the news, it still didn't do anything about it until long after the public image was damaged. You would think the voice of God on earth would channel some of that divine wrath at the person who broke their oath to the church, broke their oath to their flock, broke the law of the land, had sex out of wedlock, had homosexual sex, harmed a child, and did it all in one go and occasionally multiple times over the course of decades. That's 6 different things that the church has taken a strong stance to condemn. Were it you or me they would be quick to call us devils. Instead we can sum up the response in a jpeg and it sounds about as wrathful as a zoning board meeting.

    That in turn brings me to the real issue here, of isn't the church that people are angry at, that's just where the anger goes when they don't have the scope to see the real problem. The problem lies in tribalism and inaction in places of power. The Vatican didn't cut off the tainted limb because it was one of theirs, that means it can't be bad. When a police officer murders a minority or beats his wife, the rest don't bat an eye because a member of their tribe couldn't possibly be a bad guy. The reason politicians won't close ranks and publishing the Epstein class is because that would mean admitting their peers are bad. To admit fault in the tribe is to weaken the tribe and a weak tribe cannot remain powerful. Instead they blame the victims and hide the truth until the entire body dies of sepsis then have the gull to ask why no one wants them to survive.

  • I'm not big on ww2 details but would that actually be a choice? The vatican is smack in the middle of Italy, they wouldn't even need to fly the bombs over so much as toss them.

    Not excussing their myriad of other crimes but occasionally even the bad guy gets a bad deal.

  • Incase you haven't heard it enough, jellyfin is free and not anymore difficult to set up. If I can figure it out then you're probably well capable of it.

  • I've had some issues with it here and there actually. Most recently, teen titans loaded into jellyfin as a different entry for the series for each season and it didn't get any of the names or order right. After the first two entries it just became easier to copy paste SE01EP and type the two numbers than it was to try and save the episode name. Jellyfin finds those itself anyways.

  • I'm kind of standing on the opposite side of the crowd in an identical soggy ditch as you. I set up the arr stack because I thought it was the next line of progression, instead I find out that the problems I was hoping to solve are endemic to the system and not the method. Using youtube-DLL to get all my music back left me with about two thousand files that MusicBrainz can't identify which means I'll have to play memory match annually for each one because I've never been good with remembering band names. Lidarr also doesn't recognize them and the ui is yet another list of steps I have to learn.

    I was hoping prowlarr would be an upgrade to torrenting, I haven't had my finger on the pulse since 2013 and everything I knew is gone. Instead I only have access to trackers from the two torrent sites I already knew. If I couldn't find it myself then a bot looking for me isn't going to do better. Trusting a bot to not expose me is an even harder sell. I know the science, I know the method, but I'm old enough to remember all this being unreliable and that's a hard view to shake.

    Sonarr and Radarr worked fine out if the box, but they didn't have anything to do as I already curated all my movies and shows. All they managed to do is rename a few obscure things to the wrong name. Try as I might, Sam and Max: Freelance Police doesn't exist as far as these things and jellyfin ate aware. I don't blame them, I'm still not entirely sure they're not some cognitohazard pretending to be a show myself.

    I'm sure the vast amount of my problems are user error, I'm practically a luddite and I'm only getting into this to escape the corporate spying and endlessly fun tax our society has agreed is ok. If I could pay someone to set this up for me in homemade pickles, home repair, and DIY reptile habitats I'd do it in a heart beat.

  • Hershey's made a smores bar decades ago. Despite not liking Hershey's at all, I loved that thing. Had the perfect ratio of chocolate, marshmallow, and Graham cracker, wasn't too sweet, and it was easy to eat unlike the messy real deal. I still crave it from time to time.

  • When I was a kid it took me several years of owning TimeSplitters Future Perfect to beat the story despite playing it literally every day. Id first seen the game when I was younger and watched my older cousin play it and the zombie house freaked me out so much that it would get my panic going when I got the game myself at around 13. It wasn't until I genuinely set down with the goal of beating it that I realizes it had not aged well at all in the high point of the zombie craze and was actually hilarious.

    Easily my favorite game of all time and I can't wait for TimeSplitters rewind to get to it. I still have my disk and of all things, the spot I used to stop it at is exactly where it throws a disk read error on my reclaimed Xbox.

  • I feel kind of seen. 90% of my problems on Linux falls into the 2 year to 13 year category. Occasionally I find a convoluted fix that worked on Ubuntu 14 and by all rights shouldn't fix the problem that by all rights shouldn't even be happening on Ubuntu 24 but still inexplicably works so long as you remove 3 repositories from your system and haven't gotten up to piss in the last 3 hours.

  • Everyone else has the real details, but from my very amateur perspective thee big part is that it's not connected anywhere else and it's open source. I have to have an account with Plex to use Plex, so no matter what I do I always have to have there permission to get in the building. Jellyfin runs on my own box and stores its files in that box. I even know the exact directory my account is in. If they decide to push an update that doesn't jive with me, I just won't update my machine. If it goes off the rails at any point, there's at least thousands of jellyfin users that actually know what they're doing and we'll have a new jellyfin with black jack and hookers in less than a fortnight.
