  • My comment was more about how I feel. Wine is a choice. It's a choice to turn off better choices out there. It's a choice to not be strong and not take the leap to other open source alternatives. It's a choice to keep putting money in the oligarch's pocket.

    My comment is to encourage people to turn off their fears and make that leap. It's to encourage people to try out the alternatives and support the open source community.

    But wine is also a choice for when you're forced to use an app that your company or client requires. But if your not the that category I encourage you to try out the open source alternative.

    My comment is also based on the fact that making corporate apps more accessible and mainstreamed to Linux makes better (designed) apps less supported and less robust.

Wine is a crutch stopping people from choice and keeping money in the oligarch's pocket instead of people to taking the leap and contributing to open source expansion that allows us to have choice. But I think you already knew that and chose to take a cheap shot instead for karma.

    Would have taken you more seriously if you made an argument that wine at least allows people to dip their toes in the Linux community but no, you chose to sound like a "badass" instead.

  • Ah. I didn't know you could still read my comment. I deleted it because I realized I'm on jetbrain's channel and thought my comment might be in poor taste but if you can read it anyways I guess I'll just go ahead and restore it lol.

    It's cool that you've been trying it out. But I know it can be some sticking points. You have to learn a whole other language style and relearn it every time you want to make adjustments.

    It sounds like you almost have a working environment so that sounds good but also sounds like a fluid workflow isn't quite there yet but doesn't sound like it's that far away.

    A quick search led me to some plugins and setups but I'm sure you've already went down those roads.

  • I have a question about the ide use. Would working in JVM languages within a tmux+neovim setup be a viable option?

    I haven't done any work in the jvm in almost 10 years as I pretty much detested the jvm but was thrilled about learning scala. However, I began studying rust shortly after learning scala and just didn't see the reason to work in the jvm anymore. (A lot of people view rust as a competitor to C++, but I see it as the competiter to Java).

    One of the big sticking points against the jvm for me was the go-to IDEs. They just always seemed bloaty and convoluted. Basically just bulky, buggy and annoying to work in. And they also weren't any that I can think of off hand that weren't completely open source which just seemed dirty to me.

    So what are the sticking points against something like a tmux+neovim setup for jvm projects?

    As for the former, they would let the world burn and their children die before they admit they were wrong. It's that bone headed demographic that we're talking about.

    About a decade ago I went through an Ubuntu phase only because a lot of tutorials had their Linux examples in Ubuntu. Ubuntu was so dam laggy and frustrating that the Ubuntu phase didn't last long.

  • I might try walking away from the screen for the whole weekends as my new year resolution (for different reasons). My eyesight is starting to fail and I think a 2 day break from the screen every week could help.
