  • I abandoned my plan to go into software development by means of university, left secondary school and took up employment in a different field.

    After a bit of lateral movement and promotion to a job that was more desk-oriented, I'm doing a computing degree part time, and I actually really enjoy it.

    I'm doing it for fun, because I enjoy the subject - I've got no plans to use it and there's no job pinned on the hopes of passing. It's wonderfully liberating.

    That said, I appreciate I'm in a privileged position to be able to do what I'm doing.

  • Academic year is largely done, so I'm looking forward to three months of kicking the arse out of my gaming to-play list; getting out running more; and spending time with the family.

    For the second three months, I'm looking forward to enjoying the study and achieving good grades, before it fades away into another nine month slog and the pass mark becomes the target and not the minimum 😂

  • I grew up in the 80s and 90s where media companies were getting ever more protective of their intellectual property rights and burning most projects that even had a whiff of their ideas or characters.

    Certainly film and TV adaptations of any major series had so much editorial oversight that even Easter eggs had to be covertly left in the final product.

    Videogame adaptations allowed developers a certain leeway, with some canon being broken or added .

    Comics though... fuck me. Historically they have always been the wild west, with rights holders being like "you know what, fuck it, go crazy" and the results are beautiful.

  • I suppose everyone has their own preferences. If people reaaaally want to wear their Death Run 69420miler UltraPersistence shirt to a two-lap-round-the-village local 5k race then go wild I guess, ain't nothing stopping you, just feels a bit tone deaf to me.

    As for wearing running shirts, I guess it depends. I have a few plain Brooks or New Balance shirts that I just enjoy wearing on warm days, or even a Disneyland Paris wicking shirt that's just quite comfortable.

    That said, I personally purposefully don't wear any of my "achievement" finisher shirts, I just hang them up above my gym mats in my garage - perhaps as a source of inspiration.

    Having a "favourite" running gear is awesome though. I've got a couple of shirts and pairs of shirts myself and it's awesome having a set of gear that just works when you're out on tarmac.

  • One of my verrrry minor bugbears is people who show up to 3k or 5k fun runs wearing gear promoting events well above the event's level.

    Like "okay dude, that's a nice Antarctica Marathon t-shirt but it's not going to make you look cooler in the Buttfucknowheresville Gala 5k", or "settle down Mrs London Marathon windbreaker over your Kona Ironman tech tee, you're going up against someone with a cotton T-shirt from Asda and thick shorts that are going to build up enough charge to power a small African country".

    Big respect to the effort they put in to earn the gear, but who are they honestly trying to impress?

    I'm not athlete but I enjoy going for a 10k run on the longest day - I'll see the last glimmer of evening light at 2am or so, and see the first rays of the sun and hour later or so. It's a wonderful feeling.

  • In secondary school, we always had the rumour that if you blew into a woman's vagina then it would kill her.

    It was received with more hilarity than sensibility... though it did mean that future oral sex was delivered with a little less exhalation.

    Then, it turns out you can kill a girl by blowing into her minge and middle age dudes creased with laughter again, as if the previous 20 years of maturity never happened.

  • Computerphile did a wonderful feature worth ten minutes of your time - going into surface level detail of how some AI models put ethics to one side to achieve results.

    It's not just AI and it's something humans can do too, but it is a bit unsettling (from both parties, in retrospect).

  • If that sort of thing entertains you, you should check out Time Bandits (it's from Apple TV originally I think but can be found on the high seas no drama), and one of the story threads deals with a girl of early secondary school age, left in a prehistoric time - and she ascends to being a leader, educating her tribe with her 2020's saaarh laaahndan banter.

    When they head back to find her, the tribe are all conversing like a mob of youths outside a McDonald's on a Saturday afternoon. It's absolutely brilliantly written and well worth a watch.
