  • I couldn't get my head around that stat, thinking that on average it was the current pope and the next pope (who doesn't know it yet) in the Vatican; or whether it counted the remains of popes gone by.

    Then I saw the metric area of the Vatican and it made a bit more sense... but not by much.

    As for the sanitisation, it can take many forms. Either characters that don't usually appear in the context for that field (in terms of names, you can usually scrub most parentheses, more than one hyphen in a row etc) can be removed; copy it to a known encoded field such as unicode to get rid of characters with unusual properties; and making sure bounds are enforced to avoid overflows.

    It should mean that your data is exactly that - raw data, and not commands or operands for the interpreter to act upon.

  • Whereas it's inexcusable, it is understandable.

    That must be right up there with one of the most boring jobs in the world. The autonomous systems will react correctly most of the time, so to sit through miles of uneventful journeys and have to catch an error in half a second must be really tough, even if it literally their one job. I suppose it's like rawdogging an entire long haul flight - only to be expected to catch a priceless vase that will might drop from above you at any moment.

    Anyone who has taken a long drive at night or on boring roads will likely tell tales of times they've struggled to stay focussed or wondered what happened to the last five miles, necessitating a rest stop for coffee or sleep - I suspect that isn't even an option for these drivers.

    At that point, the person is less than useless as a human-in-the-loop safety feature.

  • Certainly in the UK, the £1 preauth was just a check to see if the card was valid. Once the issuer returned the thumbs up, there was no cap on what you could draw from the pump.

    Either a scenario like the above would happen, or people who were running on fumes two days before payday would do this stunt - full up with sixty quid's worth of fuel - and when it bounced, would go back in on payday and be like "hey that's weird, sounds like your machines are acting up" and nobody would be any the wiser.

    Now it's a near universal £99 preauth at unstaffed pumps.

  • Brilliant dude. I'm the other side of the same coin - I'm not really interested in the application of the tech - but I got licensed just for a laugh to learn about how it all worked.

    My interest doesn't lie in the manufacturing or physical infrastructure, more the signal theory and ionospheric interactions for over-the-horizon communications. I just find that a bit of wire with a bit of power can send messages worldwide fascinating.

  • Point 3 has always been a great equaliser. I grew up in a household that was tight for money, and I never felt that my school wear defined my "class", quite the opposite.

    Now I'm older and am in a comparatively fortunate position financially, I'm happy to kit out my kids in a uniform. I don't really want them flashing brand names or in an arms race to look the most fashionable, and I don't want the less fortunate folk in the class to feel left behind.

    If a uniform is plain and inexpensive, I think the positives outweigh the negatives.

    On an unrelated note, my old girl used to take me to a local cafe for a slice of toast most mornings - there were two cabinets there.

    My first memory of gaming as a three, maybe four year old was Pac Land, 10p a pop, absolute banger of a game - even if the controls were seriously dodgy.

    Next to it was Street Fighter II - a premium cab at a whole 20p a credit.

    A group of teenagers were playing it one morning, and I popped my 20p in, and I didn't know what the fuck I was doing. This older lad absolutely demolished me, like never even gave a poor kid a chance. Fair play, I learned a lot about going up against skilled opponents that day!

    In a similar vein, one of my old haunts had a jukey, but the button under the bar to skip tracks was fucked. So, we'd get towards the end of our drinks, put two quid in the jukey, pick two decent songs to give us six or seven minutes to finish our drinks, then queue up a load of Christmas songs... in June.

    We'd drink up, fuck off, and sit smugly in the next pub knowing there was half hour of Mariah Carey & co. blaring out at the previous pub which couldn't be skipped. Good times.
