He's just trolling, he needs to sustain attention which translates to income, now that it's waning and he looks like a loser. What else is he supposed to do -- get an HVAC license? Work at an Apple store? His options are limited.
This might actually be something we can effect from grassroots. If we can build our local community, start group chats with our neighbors, host Block meetings, etc., we can spontaneously choose representatives to go to our city council meetings and voice our concerns.
I think this is pretty much the answer regardless. If the people are educated and organized and they fight, then over time it'll come better and better. If the people are not organized, then the best "system" in the world isn't going to do a damn thing to prevent the end.
Makes sense. Yeah, a lot of things sound great until you put them into practice and then there are 50 different problems with it that were not present in the original purely in the mind genius version.
Make it hierarchical. Every 50-100 people in their little community elect a leader. Then, all those leaders get together into groups of 50-100 and elect a leader of that group. And then, all the leaders of those groups, et cetera you get the idea.
Do away with this concept where people are voting for random dickheads in faraway lands who will never interact with them, they have no daily concept of and no familiarity with, and there is this weird middleman involved of a distant organization that is deciding who out of hundreds of millions of potential candidates are the 2-3 that are permitted to be on the ballot of us to vote for. Do away with the team sports aspect where people are coalesced into artificial groupings with colors assigned to them and then the default is for them to vote for whoever's got the right color attached to them.
Obviously it doesn't mean that whoever's at the very top of the pile gets unquestioned power. You could have it as a sort of parliamentary system, where the top person carries executive power and then ones below them (or maybe 2 levels down) are the parliament or legislative branch. And then the courts are just separate from that, similar to today.
Maybe make it so that anyone who can gather 50 votes can be in the L1 grouping. So you can choose to organize yourselves into little communities without needing to be in the same location or having districts drawn by some suspect person. All the people who work at one company, all the people who like Linux, all the people who care about one racial or cultural grouping's issues can always put their person in L1 if there are enough of them. And then, any number of the L1 people can put in an L2 person. And so on.
Maybe there are flaws, but I feel like the lack of information and day-to-day familiarity with the people you're voting for, and the barriers to entry for ordinary people, are some of the biggest problems with all of this right now. It would be dope as hell if everyone who frequents one particular game store or college or housing project could get a couple of their people up into the very lowest levels of government just by all deciding. But, the person they're going to pick is based on actually knowing and respecting (at least vaguely) that person, not on TV commercials. And then the L1 people can do likewise, they obviously will start to know each other and they can develop some consensus about who should go up to the city council on their behalf or whatever.

Just to make sure, it is still a good idea to have a contractor over to take a look. Water may have been in the walls for a while before it came out the downstairs ceiling, and if you now have issues with mold or rot, they will be cheaper to resolve the sooner you start trying to resolve them.

For whatever reason, the FDA will not allow smoking to be the only method of preserving salmon (maybe wise considering how little attention the food producers pay to making sure their stuff's fully on the up and up.) You have to also salt the shit out of it, to the point that it really doesn't taste all that good. Proper smoked salmon is absolutely fucking delicious, and doing it yourself or having a friend who does is the only way you can actually experience what it's supposed to taste like.
Yeah. There would be a way to do it that I feel like might potentially be useful. The described method (doing clustering instead of just having a similarity threshold to group tabs together, vectorizing the entire tab title through a whole fucking network instead of just tokenizing it and calling two tabs similar if they have uncommon tokens that are within a certain similarity level) really sounds to me like people who have no real idea what they're doing, just being "ML experts" all over the codebase and fucking things up, and probably walking away very proud of themselves while helping themselves to bunches and bunches of the Mozilla Foundation's Google-money.

IDK, the original article is sort of in this Schrödinger zone. On the one hand, yes, it's harassing and you shouldn't make dickhead jokes where the principle of the joke is basically "lol they're women." On the other hand, people can do funny things sometimes and be dickheads, it's part of living in a free society. Definitely trying to crack down on it and tell them they can't is just going to spark this universal human impulse to say "Okay I hit paydirt here let's double down because now it's really funny if it happens again."

If I were in a conspiratorial frame of mind, I might think that there are people who are trying to push the "Substack = Nazis" narrative, by spreading it around in contexts where the "official" content of their message is actually something different, which is usually a lot more effective at spreading the gestalt you're trying to spread around than just spamming "Substack = Nazis" everywhere.
The whole framing of the underlying freakout, that if Substack sent you a push notification about somebody's blog, they're obviously endorsing it, and it's "being pushed algorithmically" by Substack, and look, here's this very visual-picture-friendly juxtaposition of the Nazi logo in a Substack notification, even if the actual accusation is being walked by to "I think they should ban Nazis and this shouldn't even be an issue" (which would be a fair thing to say) and "I'm alarmed that they took VC money from some pretty suspect people at different points in their history" (which would be a fair thing to say).
But, that's not what they lead with. What they lead with is "don’t take any action" (they did take action), "'oops, all nazis' notifications issue" (not even sure what that means, but Substack is overwhelmingly leftist obviously, not "oops all nazis")... you get the idea. There's some other innuendo stuff in there, implying that "free speech" is just a cover because Substack loves Nazis so much that they're hosting a ton of solid left-wing journalists and providing them funding, just so they can have a handy excuse to host this one Nazi blog with 768 followers, which is the real goal.

Anyway, you seem to be grasping the point I was making now, so great. Anyway, to me, the bottom line is: It's better to let people talk. I federated with Hexbear and lemmy.ml, too (or did, back when I had a server of my own, sniff), for exactly the same reason. It's not Substack's fault that there are Nazis in the world, and in this particular case and framing, I don't think moving them to some other segregated platform does anyone any good. I actually think it helps the Nazis a lot to separate them from the main flow of information exchange. I realize I'm in the minority in thinking all of this.
The best way to combat that is not having Nazi shit.
Banning Nazi shit, especially if you are now taking a ton of money from standard silicon valley VCs, is the first step towards banning all "antisemitic" shit. It's just a hop, skip, and a jump away. I think I actually had this exact conversation specifically about Substack with someone, at great length, a few years ago, and they were pointing to Germany as an example of how it should work (banning Nazi shit), and I pointed out that the same laws could easily be used against pro-Palestinians, and they all told me I was crazy.

The URL has a "1" at the end, which usually means someone lost their account the first time and is now making a new one. I can't really make sense of how old the "1" version of the account is or if there used to be one without it. The blog hasn't been deleted yet, which sure isn't great, but I'm fairly sure that the people at Substack didn't make this blog or deliberately take pains to make sure it exists in any way.
I mean, you do understand that when I get a gmail notification about herbal Viagra, that doesn't mean Google has gone into the herbal supplements business, right? And in general how platforms generally work? As I understand it (and tell me if I'm wrong), their currently policy is to ban Nazis and this one should be gone soon. Maybe I'm wrong, I'll check back in a couple days and see what happened with it.

I mean, not from him personally, any more than they did from Kim Kardashian or Skims, the apparel company. I do agree that lots of VC money flooding in is a significant problem, just because it's usually (almost always) a corrupting influence in the long run. That doesn't mean that "Substack has a Nazi problem" all of a sudden becomes validated.
