  • Try "Scaled," it is better.

    • Reject Unix, return to Plan 9
    • Think through how to provide a consistent ABI for shipping binaries (and installing third-party packages) easily in a distro-independent way. Maybe just freeze a minimal (versioned) ABI, and have vendors have the option to ship binaries compiled against that frozen ABI, similar to how 32-bit compatibility works. Then you can do all the package management stuff for binaries that want to do it that way, but you can also support third party programs without it being a catastrophe.
  • I'm not trying to brag: I have a Sebo vacuum cleaner, one of the fancy ones. I'm extremely happy with it. Having a nice vacuum cleaner is absolutely worthwhile.

  • Three options each with a couple of options, depending on factors:

If short on time or lazy:

    • Cold cereal with milk
    • Granola + yogurt

    If motivated:

    • Scrambled eggs with cheese, salsa, breakfast potatoes / toast, hot sauce or spicy chicken mixed in
    • Pancakes with butter + jam

    If depression:

    • Nothing and then early lunch
  • That's the point.

Trump has an innate hatred for anything that can root out corruption and failure because it leads to suffering, because he thrives on corruption and failure (and for that matter on suffering). I have no idea when it stopped being a deliberate plan and simply became part of his instincts, but if he knew about these detailed fact-finding videos, he would be filled with horror and loathing on a primal level, and probably would have destroyed this agency long before it sort of happened on its own just now as part of his general mayhem.

    Hoo fuckin' boy

I do have to say that including Hyprland in the original post is silly. Hyprland had a problem with ignorant users making ignorant speech in their community, and they didn't police it, and once a shitstorm started, they recognized their error and started trying. It's fine. Putting them up top, and Omarchy which is literally lead-developed by an open fascist, down below, is weird.

Holy God it's a shitstorm... reading

I just want to point out there is nothing true in this statement. No such thing as far-right in current government (unless you consider anything right of your beliefs to be far-right, which is just silly), and immigration is completely fine, currently. My wife is an immigrant and non-us citizen and we have many immigrant friends. They are only deporting criminals, illegals, people who have broken the law.

Fuckin' hell man. (That quote is from nobody in particular, just some random user chiming in... but still fuckin' hell man.)

nrp's reaction in the reply chain mostly just reads like he hasn't picked up what's going on. He still thinks fascism is "a political view" instead of "an active threat that might come for him and people he cares about right now, into his house and his safety, that needs resistance." I don't think DHH needs to be in prison or anything unless he's done something. I do believe in free speech. But yes, the time has come for boycotts, strikes, marches, strengthening the organizations that we'll need as things continue to get worse. It sounds like nrp is just privileged enough living his tech life that he doesn't grasp that, and he can't understand what people are mad about here.

Nobody remembers Switzerland as unsung heroes of World War 2, because of their commitment to freedom of expression and commerce for any side without prejudice. They're lucky they got away with it, to be honest.

  • Pretty sure there is a pretty generous window where you can just return the thing for a refund no questions asked. It might be worth looking into.

Depending on the wording of the return policy, you might even be able to request one and tell them the reason is "The far right has taken over the world's biggest government and they're snatching people in the streets. The time to hide support for them behind 'everyone's welcome to their opinion' is over. If at this moment in history you're not willing to exclude far-right people from your circle, then go fuck yourself, fuck your hardware, give me my money back, in hindsight people should have done this to BMW and IG Farben both before and after the war. I hope you wake the fuck up. You will not be safe indefinitely from them coming for you, unless people braver than yourself stop them before they reach you."

Usually I am against bullying people into saying the political views or taking the political decisions you want them to take. You can think they're wrong about this (as obviously do I, for the reasons stated above) and say so without needing to try to strong-arm them. But, in this case, fuck 'em, for the reasons stated above. Read the return policy first of course to make sure you're on solid ground, I don't really know what it is.

  • "This is what Governor Pritzker calls cooperation"

Here's what Governor Pritzker actually said:

I am ringing an alarm, one that I hope every person listening will heed, both here in Illinois and across the country.

Over the weekend, we learned from the media that Donald Trump has been planning, for quite a while now, to deploy armed military personnel to the streets of Chicago. This is exactly the type of overreach that our country's founders warned against, and it's the reason that they established a federal system with a separation of powers built on checks and balances.

What President Trump is doing is unprecedented and unwarranted. It is illegal. It is unconstitutional. It is un-American.

Donald Trump wants to use the military to occupy a U.S. city, punish his dissidence, and score political points. If this were happening in any other country, we would have no trouble calling it what it is: a dangerous power grab.

Earlier today in the Oval Office, Donald Trump looked at the assembled cameras and asked for me personally to say, "Mr. President, can you do us the honor of protecting our city?" Instead, I say, "Mr. President, do not come to Chicago."

You are neither wanted here nor needed here.

Finally, to the Trump administration officials who are complicit in this scheme, to the public servants who have forsaken their oath to the Constitution to serve the petty whims of an arrogant little man, to any federal official who would come to Chicago and try to incite my people into violence as a pretext for something darker and more dangerous: we are watching and we are taking names.

This country has survived darker periods than the one that we are going through right now, and eventually the pendulum will swing back, maybe even next year. Donald Trump has already shown himself to have little regard for the many acolytes that he has encouraged to commit crimes on his behalf.

You can delay justice for a time, but history shows you cannot prevent it from finding you eventually. If you hurt my people, nothing will stop me, not time or political circumstance, from making sure that you face justice under our constitutional rule of law.

Yeah, sure sounds like he stabbed you in the back, swearing he's cooperating and all that.

I am not saying it is technically impossible, I am just saying it would be weird for such a fundamental fact as over 50% of ICE agents' income coming from personal payouts for bounties to just not be reported on anywhere. And of course "it has been mentioned in various spots on Blue Sky" is more or less the same as "my cousin told me."

(Actually, it is worse, because you know your cousin is a real person whereas on Bluesky there is no such guarantee. But, regardless, it basically means nothing at all in terms of whether or not that assertion is true. "Weird" is an understatement for how improbable this is to actually be true.)

lemmy.world comments section in action, I guess. Literally every time someone comes at me with some kind of bonkers take, I look up, and I see that I am in a lemmy.world community.

  • It has been mentioned in various spots on Blue Sky and so forth

Oh, well in THAT case lmao

  • ?

    What?

No it isn't. Where did you get this idea?

  • I feel like it is complacency poison, and habituation of what the important issues and messages are. It's like, it can't be that bad. They can't just be killing people. And they can't be planning what they are clearly planning.

  • That honestly is huge to me. Why the fuck the Democrats are not saying that ICE is snatching random people off the streets of this country and they are planning on making sure they don't get paid another paycheck until they stop doing that, and that's the hill they want to die on, I have not a fucking clue in the world.

  • Do they get paid? The military doesn't. ICE still getting paid would be a little surprising but not really.

  • I'm not sure it is even the strategy consultants who are framing it that way. I feel like the Chuck Schumer / consultant framing is "we hate doing this shutdown because it makes us look bad." Then there is the Bernie / AOC framing of "it's really critical that we don't kill 50,000 Americans a year by taking their health insurance away that is what we're refusing to compromise on." That's better, the consultants would have been fine with caving and killing 50,000 Americans a year, they've done it before. Even better than that would be "Well we should be shutting down the government, because what the government is doing is attacking American citizens and in some cases killing them directly and building camps to house them by the thousands. And the Supreme Court just said Trump is king and doesn't even have to honor any 'deal' that Congress works out about health care or anything else, so fuck it, government's closed." That framing is more where I'm at.

  • Every time I come to lemmy.world, I always regret it lol

If this were the explanation, they would surely be aware that they are talking themselves into potentially a concentration camp, or potentially "only" losing their job and career forever and becoming a bunch of Leon Trotskies. Your theory has a certain emotionally satisfying nihilism to it, but it doesn't actually make sense for understanding the nature of the failures in our government (and ideally being able to react to them constructively in some fashion, in the future.)

  • It's all fucking bonkers. They are talking about loyalty pledges for universities, they are doing little pogrom dry runs on Chicago apartment blocks, they are building the concentration camps. And people are still out here wrangling about health care and tax benefits. I mean, it's not wrong, we should care about those things, but the whole framing of what is happening in the media, and treating this shutdown as all of a sudden as a big crisis overshadowing the other stuff, is just nuts.

This article to me got to the heart of it. Framing it as primarily a fight about health care plays into the Republicans getting away with more of the Hitler stuff, however it plays out.

  • Yes. The random chemicals that go into these drinks do all kinds of weird bullshit. I have had some that more or less put me to sleep, and when I was consistently drinking canned energy stuff my energetic level was pretty much all over the place.

If you need short-term energy to force your body to burn up some resources that ordinarily it would be saving up (and delay some maintenance depending), then drink caffeine. Some of the crash that you're describing could be aftereffects of that, or it could be some other chemical reaction. Green tea seems like it works pretty clean, coffee is fine in my opinion.

If you need long-term energy, then get consistent exercise, eat enough and a balanced diet, and sleep enough. I know it's easier said than done, but those are the options that will work and not fuck up your health / energy levels over time.
