Piefed has a reputation system so that many downvotes from trusted instances - e.g. if hexbear is not defederated from, it still nonetheless does not necessarily have to have a full seat at every table like all other instances - will alert recipients to someone who likes to be controversial. It's not a filter, there is way provided to block such a person based upon this automated system computed from their received scores, but an icon next to the name let's you know that an argument with them is likely to leave you disappointed rather than fulfilled. Incels can do whatever they want, but that does not mean that others should be forced into platforming every single thing that they want to say.

Yes there are additional consequences such as being put on the sex offender registry for 30 months iirc, which I presume does things like block the ability to get higher-paying jobs and the like.

Although I find that simply blocking the entire instances of hexbear.net, hilariouschaos.com, and lemmygrad.ml takes care of 99% of the problem, and then blocking lemmy.ml deals with 90% of what's left over. The rest is just a few scattered individuals.
So many headlines are borderline disinformation with how misleadingly they present the content of the article - I have almost given up wanting to read things when I am click-baited >90% of the time into a nothing-burger that was made out to be so "interesting" and "impactful". Unfortunately in this case, it seems spot-on.
