~11% of American voters are more on the extreme left, another ~11% more on the extreme right-wing, leaving a solid 4/5ths in the middle.
Which is why these terms aren't useful in a global forum like the Fediverse - when USA Democrats are simultaneously both left and also right, depending on the recipient's POV, then the term ceases to convey any (non-ambiguous) meaning.
Or we could use the terms properly in relation to the country of origin... except as the person you replied to shows, people refuse to use that level of consideration that their preferred way is not the only lens through which to view the entire world.
Honestly, spending time on Lemmy has made me less left-leaning than I used to be. All the hate and vitriol and especially disinformation spreading has really turned me away from it all. Especially when I see how it is identical to the right-wing POVs.
Extremists on both sides: death to everyone who holds viewpoints different from my own!!
Also, what does "banning" even mean? Lemmings I find love to abuse terminology so that a one-hour time-out period gets referred to as a "ban" (tbf this was inherited from Reddit, no matter how much we'd like to leave the old ways behind, they do tend to cling stubbornly).
But I don't know how Mastodon uses those words - is he even truly "banned" or merely "banned" for like an hour while the moderator spent that time researching the situation?

Yikes, that sounds terribly unfriendly. wjs018 liked the plan, and even if it was a bit rude to simply close with zero explanation, I still would rather presume the best intentions... except then the code theft, which would have cost nothing to simply state in an announcement message where it came from. I am so sorry that happened to you:-(.
And that instance picker is an absolute mess right now, imho. Like shadow-censoring votes (even those from other platforms like Lemmy) without disclosure, and without explicit acknowledgement of such, that sounds to me like the polar opposite of "Newbie-friendly", where Reddit-esque stuff is happening and again, regardless of whether it would have been fine or not if it had been done with complete transparency (related to certain portions of it, I actually think so? internal instance matters are subject to the preferences of the owner so... yeah? you do you boo! but censoring the votes of people from other instances - that seems to cross a line?), it definitely does not come across at all, in any way that I've ever heard, and especially not in the instance picker, which philosophy (of whether it's okay to shadow-censor votes submitted even from other instances) is being implemented on which instance.
Also, wtf does defederation level = "good" mean? Especially when it reportedly is based purely on an underlying numerical value of number of defederations, but explained nowhere. Is defederating from half the Fediverse "Good" or "Bad" or what?⁉️
Then again, I guess I should learn more details about the PyLova fork, bc I thought that most of my rants above were able to be easily turned off by application of environmental variables? So it is currently unclear to me (who has not read enough yet to know) what the value is specifically in a fork of the codebase, rather than judicious usage of those. I think I am not explaining myself well here but like "No daily maximum number of votes" is something that didn't need a fork to accomplish (I... thought? obviously you know far beyond than I!:-P), though many of the other items would have (sanitization, correction if emoji handling).
Hey, on the bright side, if Rimu keeps stealing your code contributions, hopefully with acknowledgement this time 🤣, then all PieFed instances could benefit from these improvements!! Or if the PieFed devs find that annoying, then they could be nicer to their contributors. (inb4 I get banned from all of PieFed: I'm sure there's a lot I am not aware of here, I just find the situation sad is all I am saying 😢). More code is generally better (so long as written by an accomplished human)!?
Sweet! I assume but should ask I guess, will PyLova continue to pull in new features as they are added to PieFed - after appropriate and extensive review of course?
Conversely, maybe some new features could go in the opposite direction as well, to enhance both codebases?
Competition could be a great thing, and collaboration even better. While retaining the different spirits of the respective projects of course (some areas will inevitably conflict - like the vote quotas - and that's simply how it's going to be, no getting around that, nor any need to try).

This is not an objective fact but an opinion (whether well-substantiated or not I cannot tell). I am not clicking on a Facebook link to learn more, so thank you for adding some additional context here.
There is also a !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com community that will certainly agree with you that anything done by a .world community moderator is by definition wrong.
As for myself I have no opinion on this currently, but only questions like banning one person does not make a place authoritarian/fascist but a pattern of such events would. All that this post says though is a complaint about the one person - again, whether justified or not I have no idea, as other commenters here are likewise saying, we simply do not currently have the facts to be able to judge properly.
I've never used Tumblr much less its alternatives, but on the Threadiverse side, before PieFed solved the onboarding problem (and I hear that upcoming Lemmy v1.0 may improve things for it too?), it required quite a bit of effort to be the first person on an instance to sign up to a community. For one thing you already had to know the precise name for it, having looked it up elsewhere, and even after the Rexodus often you couldn't even use the community lookup tools to kickstart that and had to resort to direct URL manipulation. (Edit: oh, and the community name most often was not the same as the name displayed for it, with some methods like 3rd-party apps usually not showing the actual name very readily.) And for another thing it can be quite unintuitive to people when signing up does not appear to work right away but instead over the course of several days to like a week the posts start appearing - except not older posts but only newer ones (and not all new ones, but only some, especially when defederations are involved). Therefore I tried to help by signing up for communities whenever I could to help get the smaller instances I was on a head-start, even if I had no interest in them and left them later, just to make it easier for future people to simply click the subscribe button (and even that causes confusion, when some older content is present but then not all of it).
Anyway, the entire Fediverse is newer and the tools often are not so easy to use. It is like using a Linux CLI: quite worthwhile to learn and powerful after you do, even though it requires a rather large investment into learning how. Normally for someone not tech oriented I would strongly suggest to join one of the medium to larger-sized instances (while avoiding the absolute largest of course, to more evenly distribute the load), so that someone else has done the largest majority of this effort, and they can simply enjoy the content and contribute in other ways - voting, commenting, and posting - without being distracted by the underlying technical procedures of how it all works underneath the hood.

I guess you know but that is infamously what Lemmy.ml constantly says upon removing people from communities that they've never even so much as heard of, for obscure reasons that seem to have little to nothing to do with Rule 1 to the person receiving the instance ban.
