  • That's a very elegant way of doing it! I need to do something similar with my setup one day. Having everything hosted in my home gives me the most control but also a lower availability than if I ran everything in someone else's datacenter. Currently an outage means that browsers and other clients just time out which is not very informative. Have you explored any other options? I was thinking of spinning up a dedicated VM somewhere to handle this and automatically switching over DNS entries at the same time (maybe automatically update DynDNS when the VM boots).

    WRT is this relevant to selfhosted: I think some people will disagree, but Cloudflare is still selfhosting. It's not localhosting, but as long as it's services that you provision yourself it's selfhosting.

    But not their sin, or specific sinful/heretical ideogies If you respect people only when their values line up with your own ideologies, you've got no tolerance at all. "Sin" is defined by interpretation of the religion's canon, so it's not even remotely respectful to inflict your beliefs on other people. "Christian sin" can be defined as anything from christofascist and queerphobic to strictly the 7 deadly sins (and probably less). So let me ask, are you queerphobic or do you respect others' beliefs?

    There's also a few parts of the bible about non-believers, the most egregious is probably the part that calls for their death (2 Chronicles 15:12-13 and to some extent John 3:16). The quran also doesn't speak highly of non-believers, even if they believe in another Abrahamic religion (quran 3:3-4), so even you are guaranteed to be heretical. This contradiction allows anyone to be disrespectful of any others and it is never acceptable. As a deeply religious person, you should know how much blood has been spilt in a god's name and how little good has come from it.

    Christianity has a lot of evidence and people just like to ignore ALL of it because they would have to stop living a sinful lifestyle and tend to their Spirit and not constantly their flesh This would've been the natural time to actually provide evidence. Instead you accidentally just provided evidence to support my claim about your consistent lack of evidence in posts here.

    But to provide evidence: there's no proof of a god or god-like being with influence over our existence. There's also no proof to the contrary. Religious claims are inherently unverifiable otherwise they wouldn't be beliefs; they'd be fact.

  • I (regrettably) went through your profile and I see no evidence of what you're claiming in the OP. What I do see, though, is plenty of evidence that you like to make claims without evidence and then annoy people until they start cursing at you. It's simultaneously very Christian (religion is not based on verifiable evidence) and not very Christian (which preaches tolerance and respect) of you. My advice: lay off on the proselytising and you'll be better accepted by people who have differing opinions on religion.

    If you're just going to include source code archives in the release instead of pushing them to the repo itself, you should at least disable the automatic source code archives. But you'd be better off not using a source control website at all if you're not going to use source control.

  • I too spin up a new DB for every service that needs one. It makes maintenance less intrusive since I only have to shut down one service at a time to update or do a full file backup and I can safely tweak the DB config to best suit the service without worrying about negatively impacting other services on the same DB. I also like the flexibility to choose the best DB for the service, e.g. I use Postgres for a lot of the services I develop but they do also support MySQL/MariaDB, but I have other services that are more tested on MariaDB.

    I'd imagine having one database for everything could eventually cause performance problems across all services if the database gets too big or clunky or queries get too complex, even if just one service is causing the problem.

    I also run a lot of physical servers (I have about 10 low power computers I use as servers right now) so having a dedicated DB per service allows me to get better performance since the DB can be on the same machine as the service. Not that they need high performance, but it also helps with the efficiency.

  • An attacker can still send a compromised payload if there's no signature verification of the update. It takes a more sophisticated attack (e.g. supply chain attack, hijacking AMD's update website, etc.) but it has happened before to other companies. If the payload is signed and verified, an attacker would also need to gain access to AMD's private key to successfully send out a bad update. Assuming reasonable security, getting that private key would be a lot harder to get on top of somehow compromising AMD's update web service.

    Also CRC checks over the internet are sort of silly and redundant since every packet sent would already be subject to a similar CRC check and bad packets would be ignored (dropped and re-requested). It would only prevent corruption on disk or in memory which are a lot less likely than transmission corruption.

    Seems like just a clickbait headline. It could easily contain all of the gcode for printing the book itself and not the part for printing the letters on the page.

    But it might be possible to have gcode that (completely) prints its own gcode. Regular programming languages can do that, there's a whole fun community around cool puzzles that use that. Obviously, this project does not do that.

  • Prestige is meaningless. What matters is (relevant) knowledge and experience. Any university, assuming it's not just a degree mill, will be able to get you what's actually important.

    It's like Klingons and honour. Only the ones you don't want to be around care about prestige enough to let it influence their (hiring) decisions.

    Anyway, we do send rockets left or right. It's required to get into orbit, since basically orbits are something moving fast enough sideways so that it always misses Earth. We don't send rockets down, obviously, because that would be into the ground. But if you're talking in cardinal directions then yes, we do fly rockets in all directions. Polar orbits are called that because the satellite flies north- or southwards.

    The reason why rockets launch facing up (opposite gravity; not north) is because it's more efficient to leave the thick parts of the atmosphere before getting most of your speed because of drag. You could launch a rocket parallel (tangential) to a point on Earth it'd just take a lot more fuel. Space planes do technically launch like that, but they use the atmosphere to their advantage by using wings (lift) to gain height.
