  • As an alternative what's up docker is quite good but a bit more complex to setup :).

  • It's also kinda good¿ For writing scripts and write regex, specially claude !

If have some very basic knowledge in bash and not enough lifetime to invest into a 1 year full bash course, python or regex patterns... It's already very time consuming to self-host everything :/.

And while it mostly does what I want/need I also learned a few cool bash tricks i wasn't aware... Like how to write and use functions !

  • Why would "non-tech-savvy seniors" care what version of the Nvidia driver is installed?

Maybe he still loves playing games? 🤷 And sometimes new GPUs and drivers can be a bit tricky and buggy !

Debian being unusable due to old packages

Yeah... Debian is probably the most stable distro I've ever used ! I even forget it's installed on my server sometimes and that APT is the package manager xD

  • Yeaaah was thinking the same... He got me into docker containers and I'm glad I did ! Nice and easy introduction :) but his last 10 or so videos are all about AI and stuff... ://

  • turned this feature off only because it doesn't work for the websites that have arguably the most ad content (youtube

That's not what piHole is for. If you want to block youtube's ads you need to install uBlock origine as addon in your browser (if your browser still allows it!) Or self-host something like invidious or use one of the working public instances (if privacy focused).

I don't know if it works with twitch though 🤷‍♂️

  • But why not on a Pi, in a docker container? My pi 3bi+ begins to show some age but has been rock solid for 3 years now... I even forget it's on sometimes ! (Except when nothing gets resolved 😅🤷‍♂️)

  • Time to learn how to use one :) ! I always use https for all my services in my LAN with a local certificate authority !

I can access all my services with a LAN domaine like the following: https://*.home.lab

The reverse proxy allows to listen on 80 and 443 and forward your traffic to your specific service (https://vaultwarden.home.lab/) and back without the need to fiddle arround with ports and IPs. Thus avoiding port collision if 2 services are listening on the same port !

May I suggest Traefik if you go the docker route? Nginx is also a good solution but way more complex to setup.

  • 50 AI generated website that give a similar bulletpoint presentation of what search item X is according to the AI that generated the site.

Yeah that's what I meant by "random" shit ! 😁

  • Ohoho? That's interesting. I don't have the horse power to selfhost an AI, but that's good to know !

    Thanks for the pointer !!!

  • Yeah you're right ! However, ages ago, I still remember how you could go to page 20+ and still find some really interesting things !

Here, past page 2 it's just some random shit...

  • The documentation gives me yt-dlp PTSD 😶

  • 3 letter organisms: NSA - CIA. People tend to think that's a conspiracy theory... Even though we have so many real life examples about how the US and the 3 letters agencies have their hands all over the web and privacy and encryption is just a wet dream !

  • I used to self-host searxng for a while, but somehow the search results were always off and mixed with to much non-relevant results :/.

It's not about searxng itself... Rather how the most relevant info gets drown into AI slope and non-sense bullshit. The best blogposts/info are transmitted from people to people...

I'm kinda sad to admit that stupid AI "solved" this issue and had better results :/

  • For those who want a minimal no bullshit alternative: lychee is your best bet !

  • Yeah, same here ! Can't believe how useful it is to have a git repo to keep track of changes, even as a non coder/sysadmin.

Simple pull/push commands and I'm now able to keep track of my bash scripts and specific .dot/config files.

To bad there isn't a way to keep side notes a la Obsidian. Comments in the code are okay, but sometimes I wan't to breakup the whole command with some notes to get a better understanding !

  • Why is the Tempus logo green on the phone's homescreen but red in the application itself? Is this to differentiate the "degoogled version"?

Btw, thanks for keeping Tempo alive !

  • Oh yeah I was aware that it won't change from 1080 to 720 :p.

But I thought the movie would just be corrupted an unplayable not lose quality bits !

  • start to lose quality

Wait... That's a thing? You can lose video quality off a video file on a HD over time?

  • 👆 Exactly ! We think as ourselves as an intelligent species when in reality we are nothing more then ants with some tech here and there.

Imagine having a pocket CERN version like we use to have a mobile today (which is kinda a mini computer). 60 years ago we would have never imagined this could be possible.

We will probably never evolve as a "super intelligence", we are to busy killing each other !
