  • Amusing Ourselves to Death (1985) by Neil Postman, The Shallows (2010) by Nicholas Carr.

    I think about both a lot, both are terrifyingly prescient and the issues they describe only got worse.

    Amusing Ourselves is basically how the television age shapes politics (and all the ideas extend perfectly/terrifyingly into the modern internet era) while the Shallows is about how the internet is literally rewiring our minds.

    Both are quite short, easy reads that will stick with you.

    And on a lighter palate cleanser sort of note, anything Mary Roach writes is worth reading.

    I've wondered about the tracker thing but I figure one of the local open air chop shops would take that out pretty quick. (Best hope is the bike is so shitty they wouldn't think anyone would bother with one...)

  • That's wild to me. I guess if there's no one biking, there's no resale market so no incentive to steal them. In my city, plenty of cyclists so wild theft problem. My bike is an absolute beater of cobbled together ridiculousness. I love her but she looks like trash.

  • My kryptonite stood up to some would be thieves! They then kicked the shit out of the bike, stole the bracket that holds the headlight as well as the kryptonite lock holder. It was almost impressively petty and made me laugh until I paid more to fix her than it cost to buy her.

    In my city, the bike thefts are wild. So far I've had two stolen and my my current bike kicked to absolute shit when they couldn't break the lock.

    If, in progressive circles it was generally seen as embarrassing to have a new phone, then I'd agree with you. But realistically, that's not where we're at culturally because we like shiny n new.

    It's not bad in of itself. But if all you're doing is complaining on the internet, then it's no different than "thoughts and prayers" after a school shooting.

    Being self righteous on the internet is easy but helps no one, it just makes the complainer feel good. But it's all that a lot of people do.

    In a society where we lived anywhere close to the morals we pretend to have, these sweatshop clothes and phones that children lose limbs for would be marks of shame. But God forbid we, who have had it better than 99% of everyone who came before us, get tired.

  • I always have mixed feelings on this meme.

    One of the things that bothers me most in the world is when people are santctimonious about language or comedians while wearing sweatshop clothes etc.

    It feels like people exclusively choose the moral battles that involve zero effort or sacrifice on their part. This "oh well, what can I do about Apple?" Fucking look into fairphones, buy refurbished, be okay with a shitty old phone for years etc. At the very least, feel some fucking guilt, write letters demanding they do better (which carry a lot more weight coming from their customers!)

    Think about how much you've seen about causes that everyone upvoting has almost zero part in versus the everyday horrors that fuel our amazingly decadent first world lives.

  • And for some, that's absolutely the best solution!

    To me, the fediverse is already pretty small so I don't like blocking and making it smaller. So, personally, my compromise is to see everything but consider the source before responding etc.

    (And judicious use of piefed's user note system; good ol' vomitty face for the unpleasant non .ml folks and a big ol' smile for the sane seeming .ml peoples!)
