  • If folks want a macOS native text/code editor, I’m a big fan of CotEditor.

  • Because it’s a service using cloud AI. Processing text uses tokens, tokens cost money, hence the subscription fee.

It’s a dumb app - deliberately so - but it costs money to run and a one-off payment won’t cut it if people start using it to modify hundreds or thousands of emails.

  • No, the users are definitely also criminals.

  • This article is a couple of years old but goes into some of the factors involved. It specifically covers mobile SOCs but they’re still ARM.

That said, I’m no hardware expert so others may be able to explain in more detail.

  • In some cases they’re deliberately allowed to operate as a honey trap, allowing authorities to identify and arrest as many users as possible.

If you simply shut the site down, the users go elsewhere and you have to find them again.

  • Kind of funny to see the Lemmy version of this meme in action.

  • I don’t think I’ve ever wiped my phone camera lenses.

The case I use has a lip around the camera module that keeps it recessed, so they never really touch anything. Looking at them now, they’re perfectly clean.

  • Clearly the solution is lots of little batteries, so the plane can drop them as it flies.

  • Hilarious that you got downvoted into the negative for daring to voice a dissenting opinion. Truly, Lemmy is a child of Reddit.

Edit: Back above zero! I take it back, maybe I spoke too soon?

  • FWIW they’re definitely improving in that regard, probably because they know legislation like this is coming.

The iPhone 16 replaced the frustrating glue strips with a special adhesive that unsticks with an electric current, and the MacBook Neo is apparently really easy to get into for simple repairs.

Still a long way to go, but it’s encouraging.

  • I strongly oppose the use of generative AI in art but if it has to be done, it should at least be labeled as AI.

I know I’m mostly preaching to the choir here, but I don’t think there’s any situation in which AI ‘has’ to be used in art.

  • Some that come to mind that I don’t see on your list:

    • The Cramp Twins
    • The Raccoons
    • Watch My Chops!
    • The Critic
    • Sharky & George
    • Biker Mice from Mars
    • Insektors
    • The Wild Thornberries
    • Jackie Chan Adventures

Also, out of interest, why no 70s Hanna-Barbera?

  • Mostly a mix of CDs, vinyl, and streaming on Apple Music.

  • Yeah, if it’s not open source then free is just suspicious. Especially if it used to be sold at a premium.

  • Yeah that’s fair - it’s been a few years now and I’ve seen others say similar things, not to mention the rise of AI generated music which Spotify is apparently all too happy to push.

  • I hate Spotify for many reasons and don’t use it any more, but one thing I found it did very well was recommending new music based on existing tastes. Their daily mix and discovery playlists could be a little hit and miss, but there were always at least a handful of great tracks that were new to me.

That’s the benefit of having so many subscribers I suppose - the data pool that drives their recommendation engine is unfathomably massive.

  • For me it’s Mountain Town, but yeah that soundtrack is incredibly catchy.

  • I always have a song stuck in my head, often for days at a time (right now it’s Zorbing by Stornaway), but there are a handful that come back over and over for years.

The two that come to mind most often are Don’t Go Breaking My Heart by Elton John/Kiki Dee and, weirdly, Babaji by Supertramp.
