  • Wow, haven’t seen anyone use ‘phablet’ for years!

  • It’s possible to clarify your position without first insulting the person you’re replying to, fyi

  • TLDR:

Android devices will be permitted for personal use but prohibited from any operational or command purposes.

They cite security concerns. It only affects senior officers.

  • Also UK and similar, except our council has five categories:

    • General refuse
    • Paper and cardboard
    • Other/mixed recycling (plastic, metal, glass)
    • Compostable food waste
    • Garden waste (optional, at additional cost)

Food waste is collected every time, but the others alternate each week between either general refuse + paper or just mixed recycling.

If you pay for garden waste collection, it gets picked up once every two weeks during ‘gardening season’, or once a month during the winter.

We also don’t get wheelie bins - you have to provide your own general refuse container. Many people don’t bother and just leave loose bin bags out, which sometimes results in foxes scattering rubbish all over the street. Recycling goes in plastic crates and food waste in a caddy, which are provided by the council.

  • Yes, but I was specifically talking about the way usage has shifted over the last 20 years.

  • It’s interesting how quickly they evolved in the last ~20 years.

    From :-) to :) to 🙂

  • UK here. Pretty similar to the US in most respects, I think? But we have Christmas pudding, the queen’s king’s speech on telly, and Boxing Day on the 26th.

My wife is Belgian, so in our house we combine the otherwise conflicting traditions of when to open presents: most stuff gets opened at midnight, in the European fashion, but then we save the smaller ‘stocking filler’ gifts until the morning. Best of both worlds!

  • Hallucination

  • In no world has Apple ever been the cheaper option

  • Fighting to be king of the scrapheap. The way things are going with ARM adoption, x86 will be a legacy platform for most users in a decade or so.

(Although I suppose enterprise/servers will stick with it for far longer, so what do I know?)

  • Perhaps of note that the pronunciations of some penny amounts are not intuitive, e.g.

    • 2d = tuppence
    • 3d = thruppence

In all cases, the ‘pence’ is commonly squished together so it sounds more like ‘pns’ (like in comeuppance).

  • At killing batteries faster - the wasted energy creates heat, which degrades the battery.

  • Non-magnetically-aligned wireless chargers are far worse than fast charging.

  • Obviously you’ll want to start with absolute basics like mouse and keyboard navigation.

Beyond that? Maybe something involving a ‘treasure hunt’ to learn about navigating files and folders, renaming files, and copying vs. moving them.

Anecdotally, I’ve heard lots of kids coming up now really struggle with the concept of file systems, so it’s definitely something worth teaching early.

  • I still don’t really understand why there’s so much attention on expensive smart bulbs when in most situations the best solution would be regular bulbs linked to a smart switch.

  • You don’t need an Apple Account to use a MacBook and never have - it’s only required for specific services like if you want to use iCloud or the App Store.

  • I maintain that Cake has never released a bad album, but Race Car Ya-Yas on Fashion Nugget is absolute crap. A festering boil on the face of an otherwise unblemished body of work.

  • Børnich admitted that much of the work will be done by teleoperators in the beginning. Owners will have access to an app where they can schedule when the teleoperator can take over NEO and where they can specify the task they want the machine to do.

Those teleoperators are gonna see a LOT of dicks.
