  • Multilingual people of Lemmy who learned a language (or multiple) as adults, how did you do it?

  • My second language was German - then I was forced to pick up a third in high school. It was English...I sucked in both those mainly because I didn't want to learn. I chalk it up for my undiagnosed dyslexia - that didn't help to make it fun at all.

    What made me to stick to English is: everything was English on the Internet, all the games and so on.Then I wanted to read some not yet translated book series so went to read in English. I wasn't speaking it.Then moved to the big old USA and now I'm 99% English only. I do understand some German but ohh boy did it move into passive knowledge...

    So when you have no choice you will learn. (Tho there are so many people who don't speak English and proud of it... That's the one thing I can't wrap my head around. How can be proud of your refusal to learn.)

    Edit: forgot to recommend something - I believe it is phenomenal in some cases: language transfer I tried the English to Spanish and it is amazing for a native English speaker - hut there is value for non native speaker also!

  • I do have empathy towards both people. It has to be a very strange situation. And even the sleeping offender is a type of victim.That's why my confusion about letting the situation get out of hand.Once is a single occurrence - twice is starting to show a pattern. Fourth time is negligence.

  • Okay, this one is really weird.I'm confused. They both knew about it - they went to therapy. The girlfriend congirms he was asleep during these periods.And it just kept happening over an over.I'm really not trying to victim blame, but have theh tried to get like two single beds in the room? Have they actually tried to avoid the situation? And why end up in the court of law over it? I am really confused.

  • I don't use it consciously. But I do notice when I'm using a laptop without touchscreen - so I probably use it more than I think.I mostly use it in tent mode with keyboard and mouse attached tho.

  • We have those in both cars, also jumping cables.And I'm getting some extra fuses also (tho I don't know if modernish cars actually have burnt out fuse issue).

  • I'm sorry to say I never was joyful enough for tears, it is probably me tho. There are big joys like having a healthy child and then, they are succeeding in life or such.

    But if you want ordinary joy, small things that makes you happy I can share my latest one!My gambling is basically throwing 1 dollar bids on a local auction site and see if it gets stuck.I was thinking an emergency kit for the car would be great - you know some basic tools, some torches, some electric light maybe a reflective triangle.They had an 'emergency kit' listed and there was a very sus photo of an army green bag... $1.25 out of the door and I had my gambling (honestly I call it cheap joy)!

    It was a small backpack, a half saddle bag - green, totally military looking with velcro and those nylon things you can hook more things to. And it was heavy! Stuffed with STUFF!

    It was like Christmas - as a five year old.

    I pulled out first a temporary shelter tent. I knew this is going to be great!

    Next ting was probably the emergency reflecting blanket. Then a knife then a poncho...

    And the bag kept just giving!

    There was a showel, fire making stuff - everything you would want and need in a situation in the wildernes, a wire-saw, fishooks .... medical supplies

    They thought of everything.

    And I found my most favorite hybrid tool ever: its a hammer, pliers, wire cutter, axe, and some other tools in the bottom of its handlebar!

    Honestly it wasn't the biggest find of the century - I believe you can get it for about $40 from amazon. And it will probably never going to get used at all. But the experience of going through and opening - discovering the whole kit one piece by ther was a great joy for me. I couldn't stop smiling for about 3 hours afterward. I am stil smiling thinking about it :D

  • Probably clear coat it.It sounds barbaric but probably nail polish could work also in a pinch.Then put on a seethrough case.

  • It didn't vanish. The early investors got their money and the naive buyers left holding their empty bags.This is what they call exit liquidity.

    Exit liquidity refers to investors who buy assets at inflated prices, enabling earlier investors to sell at a profit.These later investors often incur losses as asset values decline.

    It is very common in crypto and in volatile tech stocks.

  • You have to draw a line between illegals, legal and asylum seekers.1st group: is just way of life. A country usually use these group as low class labor, they usually take up jobs what born citizens don't want to.2nd group: oh boy they are way better than your average citizen. They go through so many hoops and loops to get the legal status that a born citizen don't even think about. And they are brave as heck too. Fresh blood, new ideas and diversity - usually skilled / educated jobs.3rd group: they need help. They don't want to be here. If things get better back home they will probably leave. Your country is doing the right things, they bring you new culture new blood.

    Immigration is good for the country. Look up what happened in the southern states when the government decided to stop all illegal and unregistered work on the fields. Spoiler: literal spoilage happened.

    Closing off a country is a very bad idea. Just look at some global history (Japan comes to my mind).And even North Korea is accepting some carefully selected new blood. Do you think they would do that if it is bad for them?

  • I don't believe in tvs in bedrooms.We have a nice human sized one in the living room - but the theater has an 8k laser projector and the whole wall painted to be the silver screen. It is amazing.

  • You could look into native gardens.This is a way of planting native plants that support local species, it needs less care - and just a joy to behold.

  • Not truly, but a new idea to them - that they got to using their own devices.I think there are a lot of politicians that would have a lower number than some hardworking mountain man has.
