  • The price has been coming down because the scale of production has been going up, the supply chains have been developing, and because they are being designed to be cheaper instead of being luxury toys for early adopters. Hell, there are engineering teams who are working exclusively on ways to lower the production costs.

    And the R&D has not stopped. Billions are being poured into battery technology because everyone wants to be the one that gets the next big breakthrough. We're not just talking about lab work either, manufacturing processes are being developed and refined to bring new technologies to market. None of that is stopping, especially since improvements in battery technology have applications far beyond EVs.

  • I'm not saying changes aren't needed. But anyone who is demanding change has some idea of what kind of change they want. Nuclear annihilation would be change, but they probably don't support that.

    Even just the fact that they are upset is evidence that they wanted something more specific than just change. You can't be disappointed without having some kind of expectations first.

    I'd be curious to know what changes he thinks were so necessary.

    I mean, yes, there's a hardcore segment of racist authoritarians that are eager to bring back the worst aspects of the last several centuries. And there are people who watch fox news and see story after story about an invasion of immigrants murdering kids, eating pets, raping our horses and riding off on our women.

    But there's also people who just think that Republicans will cut your taxes and improve the economy while Democrats will raise taxes and hurt the economy. And, God help us, there are people dumb enough to believe that Trump is a beacon of fucking integrity who has only had legal problems because the entire justice system was corrupted by the Biden crime family. More generally, there are people who recognize that Washington is a dumpster fire, and therefore will vote for whoever they perceive to be an outsider (even a current a former president). And then there are people who just vote based on how they feel things are going who literally couldn't tell you what one candidate or the other is actually going to do (eggs are too expensive, I'm voting for the other guy).

  • The loss of tax credits makes it harder, obviously. But the price floor for EVs has been gradually coming down over the years, while car prices in general have been going up. Given the reduced maintenance costs and tremendous savings on fuel, EVs are still a smart option in the long run for a lot of people.

    EVs have been declared dead on a weekly basis for the last decade. And yet somehow they keep taking up more and more of the market. It's almost like these assholes are less interested in reporting a trend than in creating one.

    Sales dropping after a massive surge is to be expected. This is like predicting doom and gloom for the snowblower market as sales plummet going into summer.

  • Impeachment requires 2/3 of the senate voting to convict. The only way that will happen is for one party to have 67 senate seats, or for members of both parties to vote to convict.

    For the Dems to get to 67 senate seats in the next midterm election would require winning every single race, The odds of that are just slightly more than 0, you'd be better off playing the lottery.

    It's slightly less implausible that the Democrats could win most of the seats up for election in a large backlash against Trump and the Republicans, and that in that scenario you could get the remaining votes from Republicans who view the Trump administration as a sinking ship that they don't want to go down with. Trump's second impeachment was as close as we've seen to that kind of scenario.

    Even then, it's a lot easier to imagine Republicans going along with an impeachment of Trump (who will almost certainly be gone soon anyway) than it is for them to remove members of the Supreme Court whose positions could affect the balance of power for decades. About the only way I can see it happening (even in this extreme scenario) is if they went after Thomas and/or Alito, because they are the oldest members currently on the court and that would give Trump the opportunity to appoint two new justices.

    So, realistically, any (legal) accountability is at least two elections away. And even then, it's more plausible that it would come from a new administration pursuing criminal charges against the fascists and their enablers than it would be through impeachment.

  • I have to wonder why the pattern must be lost in the process of materialization. I'm not saying they should keep them forever, but if they can just not delete the patterns when sending people on a dangerous away mission, they'd leave open the option of restoring them to a back up state if they get killed (or worse).

    Of course, while that would raise a lot of questions to be explored in a single episode, it would lower stakes and fundamentally changes the stories they can tell, so I'm not surprised they writers don't do it.

  • Oh absolutely, this is everyone's problem. If it only affected the knuckle-draggers that made the decision it wouldn't be an issue. If it only affected them and their unvaccinated kids it would be sad but at least contained. If it was limited to their own community it would be similar to a lot of other egregiously bad policies that make life worse for the people living under them. Instead, what we have is a policy that will radiate harm into the world around it.

    All I was pointing out is that vaccines (and masks, and self-quaratining, etc) still help and in the long term, natural selection will favor those who choose vaccination. That may happen slowly over many decades, especially as the current generation of nurgle worshippers gradually age out and die. Or it may happen rapidly due to some particularly nasty strain of something sweeping through the population. You never know when the next pandemic will hit, and if something particularly deadly comes along while these asshats are still adamantly opposed to literally anything that reduces their own risks, we might see that timetable accelerate considerably.
