  • Are the whales the ones complaining? Because the whole concept of a whale is that they are the exception. The vast majority of players pay only the minimum amount or slightly more, but the whales dump so much money in that they are still worth more to the devs than the other 99% of players combined.

    Ren and Stimpy and Rocko's Modern Life both had stuff that was bizarre and only allowed in a kid's show because it was over their heads.

    Batman TAS and Gargoyles both had some heavy shit. The latter also had a guy die by having fire erupt from behind his eyeballs, and a scene where a surgeon explains a gunshot wound in visceral detail. God I love that show.

  • The Lion King is an experiment being run by the aliens from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The music is diegetic and is used to modify behavior.

    We know they can implant images and subconscious commands, and that this is perceived through music. That's why they can coordinate musical numbers on the spot, and why sudden changes in behavior and attitude are accompanied by music.

    In particular, the most critical character change comes when Simba wanders off to be alone, sees a vision in the sky, and the soundtrack kicks in with an extended version of the alien music from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Suddenly he's doing a 180 and running back towards his assigned role in the story.

  • He's incentivizing voter registration by making cash payments and a lottery contingent on being a registered voter. Adding a trivial requirement of signing a petition (a petition which doesn't function as a petition since they aren't publicly sharing the signatures) doesn't change the fact that it's illegally incentivizing registration. If I promise to pay anyone that votes for my candidate of choice and also sings I'm a little teapot for me, I haven't sidestepped the law. Musk is doing the same thing, he's just putting the petition requirement front and center in the hope that framing it that way will make people think it's legal.

    If it was a nonbinding pledge to vote or to register to vote, that would be different. There'd still be all the rules that govern lotteries which could cause legal issues, but it wouldn't actually cross the line into paying people for being registered voters.

  • To expand on this slightly, if Harris wins Texas, that plus the blue states puts her at 266. Any one swing state would be enough to put her past 270, even Nevada which has only 6 electoral votes. So unless Trump can flip a blue state, he would have to win all the swing states.

    While that scenario isn't impossible, it's extremely unlikely that Texas would have such a huge and unexpected surge for the Democrats while they are simultaneously having a disastrous performance everywhere else. It's not like the Harris campaign has been dumping all of its resources into Texas, quite the opposite.

  • If Trump wins, there is 0 chance that there are any consequences. If Harris wins, there could be legal consequences for Elon eventually.

    But if the vote buying is allowed to continue, it doesn't matter whether Elon goes to jail or not, the operation will still have had the chance to influence an election. They should be taking action to shut this down as quickly as possible. But I'm not holding my breath.

  • DeSantis likes to talk about freedom, but his approach to governing has always been to maximize the power he has (both official and unofficial) and to use all of it as aggressively as possible to further his agenda and crush opposition. He has no respect for rights, norms, institutions, laws, the will of the people, or even party loyalty. He has contempt for the idea of restraint, or, dare I say it, limited government.

    Quite frankly, I don't know that there's any line he wouldn't cross if it advances his agenda.

  • People who feel discouraged and demoralized are less likely to put in the effort to vote. The perception that your side is losing tends to demoralize, while the perception that your side is winning tends to be encouraging. And even among undecided voters, the bandwagon effect tends to nudge them towards the side they view as in the lead and more popular. This is why push polls have been around for ages, to influence people by convincing them that your side has more support than it really does.

    The idea that people will get complacent is something that I think is largely inspired by the 2016 election, when turnout was relatively low and Hillary lost. But Hillary was also a deeply unpopular candidate with a lot of baggage that voters found hard to ignore. Harris isn't universally loved, but she's a lot more popular than Hillary was. And the stakes in 2016 weren't quite as obvious and stark as they are now.

    If Harris wins, and if her administration actually decides to crack down on this shit, Musk could end up behind bars. I'm not holding my breath, but it's a still a pleasant thought.

  • Counties are very static in shape and number. Districts can change every ten years, because the number of districts (and therefore representatives) is determined by the population of the state relative to the national population. When states gain or lose seats, they have to redraw the districts. And even if they stay the same, population numbers within each district can shift and you would need to adjust the map to make it "fair" again.

  • His die hard supporters will go along with almost anything. I do think there's a line somewhere that he could cross that would cause some of them to leave, but every time some new thing comes up and they go along with it, that line moves a little farther away.

    However, he needs more than just the flavor-aid connoisseurs to win an election. A lot of the people who vote for him will be doing so simply because the feel like things aren't great and want a change. They will vote while holding their nose, or just ignoring all the insanity around Trump because after a while it turns to white noise.

    Convincing those voters that Trump isn't going to be a better alternative is possible, and it's probably easier to convince them Trump is old and unfit than it is to win them over on policy arguments. Way too many people vote (or not) based on vibes, and this line of attack works on that level.
