  • Actually seems ironic since they've never had to label actors as synthetic housewives, synthetic grocery clerks, synthetic friends, or anything else. Why has it always been acceptable to present unreal scenarios to convince people to buy stuff?

  • Yeah it's not a landmark ruling by any means, it conforms to precedents and follows common sense. Content creators are responsible for what they create.

The clickbait headline tying the author's quote to the ruling was journalistically unprofessional - but headlines are usually written by editors not writers.

  • I'm puzzled too. In DSL the "local loop" is the wiring between your house and the nearest central office or concentrator. Kind of like "last mile" but more like "last block or two". So I don't get what "adding loops" would mean.

Besides Domain Specific Language which somebody else refers to in the thread, DSL can also mean Damn Small Linux. Still no clue about adding loops.

  • Minor clarification - the article writer (not the ruling) said: "In other words, nobody needs AI to search the Internet."

The actual ruling was that a search provider is responsible if they inaccurately summarize results. When search results are just links to content related to a topic, the provider isn't responsible for the accuracy of the content, which is created by others. But they are responsible for their own summaries and other provider-created content.

  • Yellow jackets aren't aggressive, they're just annoying because they like the same foods we do and are super persistent about it. They're like panhandlers who won't give up: Got any spare change? No. Are you sure? Yes. But do you have any? No. But do you?

  • I'm pretty sure humans have liked bees and disliked wasps for a lot longer than most of us even knew there were sharks or dolphins.

  • A question about banning tech that invades privacy is irrelevant in a thread about banning tech that invades privacy? Okay, fair enough - I'll move it to Ask Lemmy, where it might not hit at many hot buttons.

  • There's more than one problem. Even if politicians weren't bribey and Citizens United didn't give corps a license to bribe them, we would still have pollution and other problems because individuals choose convenience over doing the right thing - which is "the" problem I meant.

  • I wonder if this will make the Epstein files go away tho - probably not, cuz you know Epstein... what a rascal!

Is there a cost estimate for the war extension, in ballrooms?

  • I got pulled over on suspicion of bank robbery once, because I was driving away from an area where a guy had robbed a Washington Mutual a few minutes earlier. He fit my description and was wearing a gray hoodie like me, driving an old yellow Toyota pickup like me. The cops even showed me the bank surveillance photo, which was taken from over his shoulder and didn't capture his face. He had the same shape head and was even bald on top like me. I mean, I would have arrested myself lol. What convinced them was that our glasses frames were a little different. Plus I didn't have any loot.

  • I'll wait for somebody who understands what "hypothetical" means. Sorry to take your time.

  • I'm talking about detecting dishonest intent, not fact checking.

  • Correct. Mediocre managers know they're out of their depth and are afraid to manage, because they're afraid theyll screw it up. So they look for ways to avoid it. They're the ones who constantly bring in consultants to give methodology seminars and leave binders full of crap everybody is supposed to follow. These same inferior managers think AI is their golden ticket to higher productivity with lower headcount.

  • Hypothetical question: if I invented glasses that told me when people were lying, would they be accepted or would there be an angry uprising to ban them?

edit: reminder - clicking an arrow is not an answer, it means you don't have one.

edit: why the douchevotes and silence on this? The only responder just deflected the question. It seems to me that taking lying out of human interaction would be a plus. Isn't the idea at least interesting?

  • Loyal Employee: "I've worked hundreds of unpaid OT hours to get the new HR website running. Now that it's up, my wife just had a baby and I'd like to take a month of comp time to help out."

Company: "Take all the time you want! Whenever you're ready to come back, you can use our new HR website to apply online!"

  • Maybe you can take comfort from the extremely low incidence of laptop battery fires in spite of millions of people leaving them plugged in all the time.

  • I thought I read Toyota was building their own ginormous SS battery factory several years ago.

  • Somebody got some splainin' to do.
