  • Same goes for loaded tots, loaded nachos, and most other loaded foods but ironically not for loaded baked potatoes.

  • Inglourious Basterds, no contest. Second is the Dirty Dozen.

  • Pickled manatee is da bomb!

  • Private islands. I started buying them and discovered I couldn't even afford the first one, so I stopped immediately.

  • And another about whether black trash bags are racist.

  • until the inevitable incident where they high-five each other

  • Because business types eventually ruin everything.

  • Exactly - go in for a pack of socks, come out with socks, a hotdog, and a nine-foot TV.

  • I guess most phone users aren’t bothered by this

    Bingpot!

  • I would say "non-lockable" means can't be locked, and "unlockable" means can be changed from locked to unlocked, implying also being lockable.

But to answer the question, yes we are making up language as we go along. For one thing we've always done that, but recently the trend has accelerated as people strive to reduce complex ideas to simple, overgeneralized slang to avoid having to think as much or do as much thumb-typing.

  • Because all I need to know is if my battery looks low enough to worry about, like the gas tank gauges on most cars. Nobody needs to see the exact number of gallons or liters of fuel they have left. "Close to F great, middle fine, close to E bad" has been doing the trick for well over a century. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with people who like seeing an exact battery percentage, but it really isn't necessary.

  • I click "Don't recommend channel" whenever I detect bullshit, like if the word "banned" is in the title. Those are never about anything that was actually banned.

  • And yet none of the boomers I know think or act like that. Whaddya know - people are individuals and aren't defined by the public perception of their generation. It's almost like people deserve for you to treat them as the individuals they are instead of regurgitating memes about them.

  • Thank god our MAGA guardians don't like government poking its nose into freedom-loving citizens' lives.

  • Exactly, it's the abject willful ignorance that angers me. It's not like the facts aren't there, but profiling is easier than thinking.

  • Boomer here, the first moon landing happened before I started high school. The same "greatest generation" that fought the nazis also brought them into the space program. Please get your fucking history straight.

  • Right, cuz of course the Young Republicans are a myth.

  • Yeah it's not like boomers showed up for anti-war marches, anti-racism marches, environmental marches... no, nothing like that, we just said "fuck you entitled brats". This manufactured hate is as ignorant as criticizing young people for not having kids, or thinking they all sit around eating avocado toast.

  • Makes sense, but "Youtube making the best possible effort to detect AI slop" would be heavily douchevoted.

If somebody invented smart glasses that detected lying, how do you think the public would react?

Phones are handheld computers now. Why aren't laptops phones? I know you can use VoIP or tether to a phone, but why don't laptops have LTE or 5G modules and SIM card slots as a standard?

Anybody else annoyed by news headlines being predominantly clickbaity now?

Anybody remember the brief era when kids would steal school computer mouse balls?

Did you (like me) take up drinking Earl Grey because it was Picard's beverage?

  • Ask Lemmy @lemmy.world

Anybody here whose main use of computers is NOT games?

  • Technology @lemmy.world

The Turing Test, enshrined by the public and media as THE test of machine intelligence, really isn't.

  • Technology @lemmy.world

Since nothing in this community is about technology we might as well talk about science fiction.
