  • So from 1960-1990 (30 years) prices went from about 60 cents to 1.66 per pound for beef. That's that's a 270% increase. The median salary went from 5,600 to 29,900. That's a 533% increase.

    From 1990-2020 (30 years, lucky we are skipping covids inflation) prices went from 1.66 to 3.18. that's 191% increase. Wages went from 29,000 in 1990 to 68,000 in 2020. That's 234% increase.

    So what we see is a wage to consumer goods ratio decrease from 263% to 43%.

    So our economic wealth as a country is managing to increase faster and faster, yet the consumer wealth fell off awhile ago. If you follow the stock market youd see the Dow Jones increased from 2,700 to 30,000 from 1990-2020. So comparably we should see a 1,100% increase, not a 43%.

    Granted none of this matters at the end of the day. The fact is, we are producing a fuck ton of products, and fewer and fewer are reaping the rewards of such day after day.

    If you evaluate accessibility of things after subtracting the baseline requirements to stay alive it gets real sketchy how close many Americans are getting by.

  • Inflation got watered down, what do you mean? It's just math for inflation. Capitalism uses inflation as a tool to expand the economy but at the end of the day by the definition listed on the post they are just saying if your wage doesn't increase faster than the inflation your life resources are in recession. That's at least how I read it. If you can't buy as much shit as you used to, you're doing worse. Which happens to individuals without happening to everyone, but if the average person can't buy as much shit as they could before, then it seems like recession is an adequate term.

  • Well some products will go down at first, the ones they can't sell to other countries any more the supply will skyrocket until they cut production to reduce their losses. So perishable things like certain food, will possibly decrease for a season, then will go up higher/possibly "sky rocker" as when you produce less your profits are lower, so they will have to mark them up / some people will just stop farming. The possibility of the bees dying out seems more worrisome than the tarrifs long term though for many foods.

  • In 2025 a chocolate shake is 5.49 at the sonic near me. I thought that was expensive but compared to this thread apparently inflation on milkshakes hasn't been to bad. Though I'm pretty sure you can get a $10 shake if you start asking them to add every kind of diabetes candy into it.

  • For years people asked how I kept my house so clean when I lived by myself. I had 2 plates, 2 forks, 2 knives and I kept cooking down to 1 pot. If I was making spaghetti and meatballs (the easy way) I mixed everything in the pot, I made the balls on my plate, heated up the pot, browned the balls on bottom of the pot, cleaned dish while I did it, put browned meatballs on plate, boiled water in the pot, throw in noodles drain water when aldente, add sauce, add spices and throw meatballs back in on low heat until I get the sauce how I like. Put food on plate, eat. Put lid on bowl into the fridge for leftovers tomorrow. 1 plate and fork to clean when done. 2 minutes to clean that and the stove top up. Having more people complicates thjngs

  • Strange competition as well. Let's see a person outrun a car for 13 miles. There already Jaguars driving hundreds of thousands of miles more carefully than humans are. Why are we forcing them to be bipedal? Person in race vs a smart missile. Missile makes it to another continent before the person makes anywhere near that.   • The parents died at 21 apparently. So they graduated school at 17/18, entered the work force, entered a war and had a kid by 21. That's not ridiculously young. Most of the reasons many people don't have kids at 21 these days are tied to things they can obtain easily. Food scarcity, housing, and job hunting don't seem like much of an issue. The mother can transfigure a flower into a "fish" and the father was also gifted in magic. They could build a house over the weekend with their family money.

    Snape being the same age should have put him at 32 when the first book started. Rickman was about 20 years older than that.
