A 50-something French dude that's old enough to think blogs are still cool, if not cooler than ever. I also like to write and to sketch.
There are plenty (nearing my 60s, I've had plenty time to watch movies ;). So allow me to name just a few I always enjoy watching. They are in no order save the two first ones:
- '2001 A Space Odyssey'. There are movies, many are not that great, some are excellent and of those a few are true work of art, and then there is '2001'. I'm an admirer of most of Kubrick's work but this one is in a category of its own. I hated the first time I watched it, then I watched it again and was blown away, sequence after sequence. And I'm blown away every single time I re-watch it. It's one of the two movies I consider on par with the greatest books I've ever read.
- 'Les enfants du paradis' (Children of Paradise). Marcel Carné, 1945. A french movie and the second of the two movies I consider as good as the best books I've ever read. Maybe even more than 2001...
- '12 Angry Men'. Or what it means/should mean to live and to be a citizen in a democracy.
- Gone With the Wind.
- Ghost in the Shell (the original anime)
- The Dictator (Chaplin)
- 'The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean'. I love this movie despite all its flaws. I love every bits of it, even its flaws. And I love its ending even more.
- 'Dances with Wolves'. I'm a sucker for Westerns and this one, right with 'Open Range' and maybe 'True Grit' (the Cohen version), which is also a great novel, is my all time most... loved Western. Not my favorite, but the one I love the most. Every time I watch it makes me wonder what the USA (and the rest of the world) could have been if they had managed to get rid of their hate (of the natives, and of nature). I should also list the Newman/Redford 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'. But I feel bad for only listing so few as there are many more great Westerns and even a few truly amazing ones (there is also a lot of turds, I will admit it). This genre deserves a thread on its own as it so often overlooked or ignored because of its label. It's sad.
- 'Somewhere in Time'. next to Westerns, I'm a sucker for love stories. This one makes me cry every single time. I also like 'When Harry Met Sally', a lot.
- A History of Violence. I expected not much of it but it happened to be a great movie. With an amazing casting.
- The Birds (my favorite Hitchcock, so different from du Maurier's original short story which is also excellent, btw)
- North by Northwest (another Hitchcock, another of my favorites)
- Toy Story (the first 1, maybe the 2nd too), Ice Age (the 2 first ones)
- 'Singing in the Rain'. The movie I've watched the most, bar none?
- 'West Side Story'
- 'Scarface' (the one with Al Pacino).
- Kick Ass (the first one) made a huge impression on me. And gave me hope that all was not lost with contemporary US cinema that has grown afraid even of its own shadow and has started self-censoring, hard.
- A clockwork Orange.
- Full Metal Jacket (there is a lot I like less in it but it still is a great film)
- Barry Lyndon. God may have created light but Kubrick mastered it, in that movie.
There are so, so many more! Ozu is one of the directors I can endlessly watch and have a blast, I'm also a fan of Kurosawa. I have not even considered Italian (like, they were among the best) or the Russian cinema! Or even my own French movies: back in the days, French used to make a lot of great movies but that was before we too, like Hollywood, became so afraid of our own shadow that we started self-censoring... Sad times we're living in, bu that will pass.
+1 only because I can't upvote more.
I’ve seen a lot more pro violence posts and comments lately, which is pretty off putting.
I don't see much if any content promoting violence myself but if I was I would agree with you. I also don't post any, and was not banned from anywhere: I left reddit the moment I realized I disagreed with their policy.
So, if I may ask: have you tried using the settings to decide what's (not) displayed in your home feed, coupled with keywords and blocking the most obvious trolls, those are fine tools to remove most if not all of that... sad content.
For example, on my home feed I only display 'Subscribed' content meaning that the only content I read comes from those communities I'm already subscribed to... none of which promoting any violence or, when this happens or when I realize some community is not what I expected it to be I just unsubscribe from it and I don't have to read it ever again. Also, I don't hesitate to block people the moment I realize they're to trigger emotions and provoke, not to discuss.
Edit: clarifications.
I don't mind it being quiet, quite the opposite. Which is another reason why I’ve been filtering the heck out of the Fediverse since I’ve started using it (most of the content shared is mere noise to me).
That being said, I've noticed a somewhat reduced activity without having changed my filtering in any way. That's even more obvious in my small French part of the Fediverse. It just feels a tad quieter.
Is it losing users? Are people just learning to keep quiet? No idea.
It's not great, because I would like to see the Fediverse become a real alternative to those centralized services, even if that means I would have to filter out a lot more noise, but I'm also fine with the idea that the Fediverse may never succeed in becoming one such alternative. Like I’m fine with barely anyone reaching me through MP or through my personal blog anymore. This just seems to not be a thing anymore but it doesn’t prevent me from blogging or to participate in discussions around here ;)
It has been a few years already I have made up my mind that I needed to not rely on anything for my personal use (I'm not talking banks and key services like that, just online services, cloud, social medias, Uber or even my own blog for that matters, little things like that) or to not evcen need a computer at all to keep myself busy.
I don’t mind using them (at least those that do respect my privacy) but I also would not feel devastated if they were to vanish or, but that would obviously be a very unrealistic take, if a law was to pass making it mandatory to use my real name online (which is no secret, I have used it for many years, it’s just that I’ve grown used to being ‘Libb’), or one that would make it mandatory to prove I’m 18+ to be allowed to boot ‘my’ computer... Well, if something that absurd was to ever happen, I would simply stop bothering with those online services and would stop using my suddenly not so ‘personal’ computer anymore.
I would probably would keep using one for work (it’s not that obvious, as I already write longhand) but I would not spend a cent more on online services for my personal usage and would not buy any ‘personal’ device anymore.
But I digress. What was your question? Sure, I’ve noticed some quietness going on too. Maybe we should all try harder than we already do to post more? As an incentive? I doubt it would change much, to be perfectly honest.
Too many to list.
There are way too many things for me to be able to spend much time on them. Time is scarce and most of mien is already spend on a few of the things I'm interested in learning more about.
Linked: I tend to not express my opinion on topics I have no understanding of ;)

My boyfriend doesn’t care about it, but he still says that my best friend is just “waiting for his turn with me.”
'Wrong' or 'not wrong' that is 'moral' and I don't think moral means much in a couple (edit: moral is a church thing, or maybe a tribunal one). Moral also puts you at risk of seeing yourself in the eyes of your partner (or them seeing themselves in your eyes) as 'the bad guy', or worse, which certainly will not help solve any doubt or issue you might have. Last, moral can prevent you you from asking yourself the right (and somewhat very simple) question that can help you feel better regarding that 'issue': is it something you're fine with? You both, I mean. To make it clear:
- Would you/Do you care if your boyfriend has a girl best friend with whom he likes to spend as much time as possible, and share everything, even the most personal?
- If that girl best friend existed, would you think she too is waiting for her turn to be with him?
Honestly answering those two questions can help you have a better understanding of what your partner may feel.
Since you wanted to know our personal opinions on the question of (other gender) friendship, here are my 2 cents... in two points:
- My spouse and I are certainly not teenagers anymore as we're both nearing our 60s. We have also been together for close to 30 years and counting. We still meet people of various genders and we both have friends the other is not that happy with. without any issue.Because we also quickly realized being in a couple should not mean doing everything together, spending all our time together, having the same ideas, desires, and so on. Contrary to what Plato told us, we're not one my spouse and I. We're two different persons that enjoy being together while having many opposing views and tastes. It's just that we value our relationship enough to always be more willing to make things work between us even when it's not easy, than to just part ways each time we don't agree on something ;)
- Sincere friendship is rare and precious. It is at least as rare and precious as sincere love. And it certainly is a lot more important than sex, even when it's great.
I don't care about votes myself, but:
- I think people should be allowed to vote, up or down, freely, if that is what they want to do.
- People should also be allowed to not have to see votes or be bothered with it (my own choice).
- In summary: I think it's at the individual level, not at the instance level such decisions should be made. The only task of the instance being to provide the tools for the users to apply said decision as simply as possible, and to protect those users from any abuse of the system.

because people analyzing my behavior and accusing me of things has started to get to me.
Why bother?
I’m wondering if you’ve ever felt something similar.
Most certainly: as an old dude that has been online since the mid-80s, I've had more than a few opportunities. 1) I learned to not care about perfect stranger's opinion about my person. 2) I also learned to not 'play' with strangers (not saying you are, how would I known, but if you do that may not be the smartest thing to do if you're interested in having interesting exchanges and discussions).
But I think I might delete my account and everything,
That's the nice thing about freedom: if that's what you want to do, by all means do it. Just, maybe, take a moment to decide beforehand if that's really what you want to do or if it's just some emotional reaction angry to something that happened. In the later case it may not be worth deleting your account ;)
Album doesn't mean much to me I'm afraid. I mean an opera (which literally means 'a work') could be considered an album? What about a symphony (which could means 'a body of (harmonious) sounds')? And what about all tho the other types of music?
They were not released as 'albums' (no disc players, back then) but they were released as a coherent ensemble one was expected to listen to as a whole, in a certain order. And they were released as printed editions too as, back then, owning music sheets was the equivalent of what purchasing albums is/was to us: people would buy them in order to be able to read the score and to play it by themselves or with friends ;)
Any specific era? I mean, I'm mostly into classical music and I would consider quite a few of those old pieces... hugely important, to say the least: much more meaningful than many of the more recent productions. But, even though I've a much more limited understanding of it, I also consider some more recent and even a few contemporary artists... hugely important ;)
It's easy to give it a try and decide if it's worth changing (I've done it and even though it's great to be able to do that, it's far from being complete and painless (one may not like losing all their previous posts/comments when changing instance).
I just checked I switched from Lemmy 9 months ago and and I've yet to find a reason to go see elsewhere. There things I don't like as much as others but they're easy to ignore ;)
Smurf pie is the undisputed best ;)
Or maybe I liked Piefed features better than the previous I was using?
Qwant/Ecosia.
Used to use Kagi (paid search engine, if you don't know it) which was truly remarkable and well worth its cost, at least in my eyes. But, as a EU citizen, last year US shit show, made me realize I'd better rely less on US-based tech. So...
We met online some 25+ years ago. We met by accident, while we were discussing with other people about some topic. We then started chatting just the two of us, through email and phone and after a (short) while we decided to meet (just to have a drink and diner). We met and that went quite well. So, we met a few more times and one day, rather quickly to be honest, we decided it would be a lot simpler for both of us if we just started living together not planning on anything special or anything long-term, no commitment... 25+ years later, we still live together ;)
The danger of a poster being less neutral than a moderator seems small to me.
Imagine this: I disagree with your reply (not saying I do, just pretend I do), and since I'm also its moderator, I simply delete it (and if you repost it I block or ban you. And that would just be me not liking someone daring contradict my own little comment.
More seriously, I think this would be a real huge source of trouble: people IRL already have a hard time to stand critics. That's worse online.
The person who posted would be the moderator for that post.
In theory a moderator is expected to be neutral in regard to what is being posted/shared (be ok with conflicting opinions, for example, even ones that completely oppose the OP). At least, in theory.
Someone posting something will seldom feel neutral regarding what they just posted.
Why is one bad but the other is acceptable?
A bit like being nice and polite would seldom be frown upon but acting like a dick would?
:)
