  • This is what people always seen to ignore about YouTube. It's not just another database frontend to use generated content. That is definitely part of it, but behind that is probably the largest public facing content library on the Internet with a full video recoding infrastructure attached. YouTube is the platform for which I understand that they need to monetize.

    Sure, nowadays there's also tiktok as another big video service. But I like to think that YouTube is way bigger in most metrics.

  • While still not correct with that in mind, the "initially" refers to a sound server a that sits above ALSA. There were others before Pulse, for example the aRts daemon and ESD. However, these were mostly used within their respective Desktop Environment while the rest used ALSA directly, so Pulse being the first Sound Server being widely used under Linux is one way to look at it. JACK on the other hand never left the (semi)professional niche I think.

    In fairness to Pulse, Pipewire built heavily on its foundation; in fact, is initially was only supposed to be "Pulseaudio for video", and Pulse led to huge improvements in ALSA and audio drivers. Pipewire simply couldn't have worked as well back then as it does today if it had been released when Pulse was initially.

    I don't think the broader zig community has the rewrite spirit that the rust community has. For Rust, this mentality was also motivated by an increased security, which zig does improve over plain C, but not to the extent Rust does.

    To preface anything that follows, I'm not a developer, so this is little-informed opinion.

    Writing in rust just doesn't seem very enjoyable. It's a language with security in mind, which is a good thing. However, zig also isn't inherently insecure (though it doesn't provide the same security guarantees) and coding in it just seems so much more pleasant. To me, the language makes more sense, which is also something I like about Go. Even manual memory allocation looks well-designed. At no point did I look at zig and thought "oh, that's an odd choice".

    The language isn't frozen yet though, so everything you write in it may require changes later on, so I wouldn't recommend it for anything in production. Notably, there's no built-in async or something comparable. If you're fine with these limitations, go ahead and try it out, and if you feel like it, maybe even rewrite an existing tool in it.

    ncdu for example is such a tool where the original author rewrote it in zig for version 2.

You configure it like everything else via NixOS modules which are pretty robust (but with enough energy, you can probably create something that passes evaluation but won't actually work). Only my VPSs use GRUB, the rest lanzaboote and none of these ever broke.

    So I'd say breaking your GRUB config by accident in NixOS is very unlikely.

  • You can use systemd with the classic logging tools by installing and enabling their respective service if you prefer. This will forward all messages to them. You even get a more comprehensive log than before systemd as the latter will even forward the messages that were sent before the logging service was started.

    Edit: similarly for cron, you can still use the classic tools. I see their appeal in ease of configuration. Though in my opinion, systemd timers are more powerful and better integrated (don't ask me why, I made that assessment years ago) so I accept that increased complexity.

    For logs, I actually prefer the systemd journal though

  • The issue I see with your approach is that you're looking for a tutorial for something that is basically infinitely flexible, there's multiple ways to do things, etc.

    By installing NixOS, you have already completed the tutorial. My advice is: Approach your configuration (which is actually code) like a static one first. That is set the values you want, maybe split up files a bit, keep it simple. At one point, you'll get somewhere where you think that there has to be a better way to do it than just write down everything explicitly. Then, approach problem per problem. At least that's how I did it.

    Dunno if that's the best way to do it, if you want to start managing a server farm right now that approach won't scale of course. The issue with configurations you find online is that they're rather complex – which makes sense for the cases these people have written them for. But for one or two machines, you don't need to fold attributes / generate attributes from list etc. right away. If you're not in a rush, get a feel for everything on a low level first, and then approach the deeper mechanics.

    But looking at common dosages for it, I don't think I would have understood the concept of an office on 100 mg. That is about 6 times a normal dose.

    However, I would never think of wasting a good trip at the office. Seems like a double negative

    EDIT: the dosages were referring to the chemical psilocybin, as that was what the post I replied to used. It was not about 0.1g of shrooms. Also mushrooms come in different strengths, depending on a lot of factors, including the species itself. Sorry for any confusion

  • If smart people love libreoffice, then I must be dumb. Working with it always seems weird and I never like it.

    Fortunately, I can use LaTeX for work; it is far from without issues but while being arcane sometimes (especially when tables are involved), it never really upsets me and the result looks very good. I can say neither for libreoffice or MS office. But at least the former doesn't charge for the experience.

    I hope typst gains more traction; it seems really intuitive compared to TeX and you don't necessarily need a macro package. And while it doesn't produce the quality of TeX-based systems yet, it is already good. Then again, Knuth's goal first and foremost goal was quality (and it shows); the system just had to be usable by him.
