All aboard the LainTrain - We all love Lain!

  • The world isn't benefitting from your research, you benefit from the world's research based off your own research, on and on it goes and we all get smarter and know more and strive towards bettering our condition, curing our ills and minimizing suffering and maximizing happiness for all.

At least in my opinion it's why scientific research while a truly neutral morally activity and generally done as an end unto itself - from a broadly humanist standpoint - is worth pursuing, even when the immediate benefits aren't seen by the shortsighted.

  • Nah my S.O. is down to game and does so more than me because she's unemployed, but I on the other hand don't have the time for it.

  • Where would I ever get time for that? I don't have kids but I'm genuinely curious. In-between chores, upskilling and work and S.O., I have absolutely zero time to just sit down and game, and even when I do, I have no energy.

  • Because men tend to be insecure about their height. It's not at all unusual or uncommon. The only direct reply was explicitly stating they appreciated.my honesty, which makes it seem like I've been overly "honest", in that I wouldn't date a man below a certain height. Your "factual" rebuttal is a matter of semantics.

Your personal investment in continuing to respond further convinces me not only was I right to assume, but that it is you specifically who is insecure. G'day.

  • I did answer yours. I said I assumed someone must be feeling insecure if they downvoted my very sugarcoaty post, if that's not the case then I'm wrong and that's that, but at least one dude definitely got it and said he "appreciates the honesty".

  • I think plenty do come away better people because honestly I know plenty of people who were on there when they were younger but are normal well-adjusted adults now, and also me.

  • They taught it toxicity so it knows what they mean by "don't be toxic". It's only a shame so few flesh and blood models take the same lesson away from it.

  • How am I factually incorrect? I didn't even state any facts. A statement like 5'7" is quite short is fairly subjective by its nature because short/tall are qualitative descriptors that it's hard to quantify even with a frame of reference and averages agreed upon.

  • I use F-Droid on Android and I don't use Google Play at all. I'm really glad laws exist that prevent monopolization and I'm really glad the OS is open source so that if it were to ever change I will just use a different fork.

There's no sign up or payment info required.

It works great for me. I don't pay for any apps nor have I ever nor will I, but if I did, I would PayPal/Ko-Fi/Shopify/Patreon the money to the Dev without any further sign up required.

    1. It’s your SO or kid accessing it and they don’t know any better.

Teach them or dont give them devices or admin privs on them. If all else fails they are free to use the apple app store where apple will now be exposed to the broader market and set the fees accordingly.

    1. You just bought something (an appliance, a vehicle, an FPV drone, whatever) and it requires you to use an app, and that app is an exclusive on the shadiest App Store possible.

I would never buy such junk that it requires an app. Your decisions are your own.

hope you like signing up with all your personal data and credit card information on app stores that make Apple look like saints, because that’s where this is headed, and sadly you’ll drag me with you.

Isn't that also a problem with Apple? And any specific app? In any case I've never signed up with any app store nor am I going to.

Because again this hypothetical thing you bought might be a family member buying it, so it won’t even be up to you at that point.

I mean, it's their device, why do you care? You can educate them but you can't make the right choices for them nor can I for you.

The way to avoid it is to get rid of app stores completely, and have users download and install apps one by one. Like that’s going to happen.

Do you mean like the way everyone installs programs on Windows and has for the last two and a half decades?

  • Not you specifically necessarily, but my comment got quite downvoted so I figured I'd include that as a disclaimer just in case

  • AI can do what Google used to do - do an internet search to give semi-relevant results once in a blue moon. As a bonus it can summarise and contextualise information and tbh idk - for me it's been mostly correct. And when it's incorrect, it's fairly obvious.

And no - DuckDuckGo etc. is even worse. Google isn't to blame for the worsening of their own search engine necessarily, it's mostly SEO and marketers who forced the algo to get much weirder by playing it so hard. Not that anyone involved is a "good guy", they're all large megacorps who cares about their responsibility to their shareholders and that alone.

  • Event log for when it stops working?

  • yawn Delete the Apple App Store and install a third party replacement, the way god/EU Intended.

  • Hey that's the spirit! Glad you got someone!

  • Average height where I am in the UK is 5'9" for men (175cm). I'm not dating in Asia so the global averages aren't really relevant.

Don't feel insecure though, it's just each to their own, and I hope you find someone awesome who loves you and is a good fit! (if you haven't already of course!)

I'm quite lucky because I found a girlfriend who is the same height as me. We're a really good fit together physically and much more importantly we're absolute soulmates, and in the end that's what matters.

And for what it's worth, before I met my gf when I was younger, I still went on a date with a trans bi dude who was like 5'3" or 5'6" or something because I found him super interesting. Didn't work out, and it was actually me getting turned down, so there's that, I didn't discard him as a choice just because of his height nor even the potential physical incompatibilities.

I also once set up a date with a self-proclaimed "incel" Chinese immigrant who was around the 150-160cm mark, but he got paranoid and thought it was a scam because I listed the height req on my profile, and I was really busy and not responding much because I was trying to nail down an internship at the same time 🤣

One time , I went on a date with a cishet dude who said he was 6'0", so I took the occasion to wear my heels, turns out dude lied and just looked like my son the entire time, he also had a bit of a babyface, and it didn't help he was a software engineer, and I was unemployed, but I talked circles around him in terms of computer stuff when I started infodumping about hackintoshing old vaio laptops over dinner.

Never spoke to him after that and neither did he to me lol, awkward all around lmao

  • I mean, 5'7" is quite short.

Not that I would wish it on anyone to be rejected because of their height, but we're all entitled to our sexual preferences, without the burden of justification. And this one seems incredibly reasonable, unless maybe you're in Asia where 5'7" is like top 1 percentile?

I would never date any man or woman below 5'10" because I prefer my partner to be taller than me. I generally consider anything less than 5'8" to be very short, and anyone over 6'0" to be tall.

  • All of this is far easier to subvert than tracking scripts (and cookies and port scans) which literally as evidenced by the article in the OP are not techniques that companies have "gone away" from at all, at least not by entirely replacing them.

  • I prefer nightly because about:config is accessible unlike on the mainline version. Does Beta also allow that?

  • So you got all your friends, family and coworkers and acquaintances using Signal?
