A human on earth. Ask me about weird tech. Bonus points if it radiates.

  • I remember hearing there were one or two hookups, all supported by the rest of the group giving them as much privacy as possible. Yeah, turns out that if you remove societal pressures and leave people alone, they tend to be pretty chill.

  • To be fair, I think it is okay to ask for a one-time fee for something you've developed. You want to use this $tech that I made? Sure, pay me 10 ct for every device you put it in.

  • Probably depends on the definition of "tribe", but yeah, I agree in principle.

  • In all fairness, tribes did occasionally fight.

  • Mate, you've got 130 or so comments, that's quite a lot for Lemmy. Yeah, some people will misunderstand you, some deliberately, and some are just plain trolls. Welcome to the internet

  • Eh, drowning is probably the biggest suffering you can create without going for extra effort. Just because it's quiet doesn't mean it's fast, I'd take being beaten to death over being drowned any day.

Besides, as I said, if you are not able to kill something quickly, you are not qualified to kill it. People who do stuff like catch fish and then leave them to suffocate just piss me off. If you don't have the ability to at the very least bash it over the head, then get someone to do it for you.

  • Feral cats are kind of native here (Europe). It is the massive amount of well-fed stray domestic cats that is a problem, AFAIK.

  • From what I have heard, drowning sucks as a death. Just shoot them? Or decapitate? Or use anything else that takes seconds instead of minutes?

To be fair, I have never had to heal with a cat plague, the biggest thing I've come near were rodents and fish. No idea how practical it is. But again, if one doesn't have the means for a humane killing, then don't be the one killing.

Also, I'm pretty sure those "beartrap" style traps are illegal here, and poison traps are usually designed to allow target only one species (usually, rats, since you can't get them any other way).

  • Call me a woke weakling, but I believe even in pest control, you shouldn't make another being suffer. If you have to kill something for a good reason, the fucking least you can do is make it quick. If you don't have the gender-neutral balls to do it properly, you shouldn't do it at all.

  • This is the stuff I come here for.

The paper, not the mushrooms. Although, if you have any shrooms...

  • That is not what I'm saying. More, most people won't interfere or even support someone doing things like Hitler. You don't have to love your boring 9-to-5 job organising the maintenance of the trains to the camps, but if you do it because not doing it involves inconvenience... Yeah.

  • Gifts don’t have to be something you like, want, or need

My whole intention with gifts is to make someone else happy. Otherwise, it's not a gift.

I get where you come from, I think there are great answers here that explain why the two people here are likely upset. But if you gift someone something that you know they won't like, that sucks.

  • Because we are emotional beings, because nobody is perfect, and because angry people (presumably, both of you) say things they otherwise would not say.

  • I couldn't agree more. A cute little toy or gadget? Sure, surprise me. New laptop, car, washing machine, furniture? What the fuck, why would you surprise someone with that, if I'm to use it I want a say in what kind it is and that we didn't waste money on bullshit. It's not even that I don't trust others, just that I feel left out. A simple "hey, the washing machine broke, I found a good one and I think ill buy it" is enough.

  • The Nazis couldn't have done their genocide without the support of thousands of people, all who made the decision to actively support it for their personal gain, believes, or just plain complacency. What is a genocide supporting gene in one time is a normal suburban life gene in another time.

  • That is what I mean. Imagine being an otherwise decent person who just happens to strongly believe in the whole conservative-christian system of values. Wouldn't you want to act on your son being potentially gay?

Or even if you convince yourself that it is better to sweep it under the rug for the sake of peace or something, wouldn't that be something you take into the grave? And, secretly feel relieved if your son "came out" as straight to you? After all, your own son apparently managed to get back to the "right path".

I am not a psychologist, and I believe that it is not appropriate to diagnose people who didn't ask for a diagnosis. But the father has some serious issues, and for his own safety and sanity, I can only tell OP to run and CYA as best as possible in case the family lashes out.

  • I think you put it well already. Those people have issues. Try to build as much independence as possible, and run. This has nothing to do with conservatism or religion (other than maybe weaponizing those things), and everything with manipulation and mental illness.

As I said it in another comment: Run, don't walk. You owe them nothing. But you owe yourself and the good people you met / can meet to live a good life.
